Controller > Mouse/Keyboard...........for some games.

I play much N64 emulation. Conkers Bad Fur day, Mario 64, F-Zero, Banjo Kazooie... are all bitches to play with the keyboard.

However, FPS games are sooooooooooo much better with the keyboard and mouse. SO MUCH BETTER.

Yeah. I was like "But HALO was DESIGNED for a controller."

I'll admit, its probably done the best for an FPS with a controller...but mouse and keyboard is still much better.

Im glad your converted, but Halo was origanally a PC game before the bastards at Microsoft moved it to X-Box.

On a different note, it is possible to use an ethernet cord to link a PC to an X-box and play them together? I need to settle an argument about why mouse and keyboard is better a gamepad for FPS.

Nope, different games and all.

And don't call Microsoft bastards for wanting to have a surefire hit for their new gaming system -- you would do the exact same in their position

Now, i'm sure there is a way to get a mouse and keyboard for the xbox...

Simultaneous releases do not sell fledgling consoles however, which was the point of making it XBox exclusive for a while.

Depends. If you're more used to computer FPS games and the keyboard/mouse setup, then yeah, it'll play a ton better than with the controller. If you're used to the controller setup on consoles, you'll pwn with that.

I've found that the small XBox controllers actually work extremely well for HALO.

But really, FPS games have evolved the way they have over the years due to keyboard/mouse controls, not console controllers. I can understand why some people wouldn't dig the whole keyboard thing, though.

yeah, and having the mouse to the right of the keys you use means you dont have to have your hands too terribly close when playing, instead of potentially trying to cross them.

Even with a good 11 keys just a small gap away from the arrow keys, from WASD you have 25 in the same distance

WASD is what I used, although I've been contemplating switching to ESDF, as that offers even MORE keys...but I just haven't made the jump.

Arrow keys are just unnatural.

I've always used ESDF personally. WASD is just a holdover from way back when you had to hold shift to run. Don't understand why WASD is still used over ESDF.

Back on topic, I thought Halo played better on the XBox personally. The PC controls feel noticeably sluggish for a FPS. Of course, that could be because it was a badly done port and runs horribly on the PC. *shrugs*

I don't see any inherent advantage in using ESDF over WASD.

WASD over the arrow keys, sure, but I don't imagine there's that much of a difference with the movement keys shifted over to the right one.

Squier, basically its access to more keys. In most games it doesn't matter, but in some it does. Personally, its also more comfortable for me since I have longer fingers and they don't fit comfortably on WASD.

You're one of the strange folks then who it actually runs well for. The vast majority of people, including myself, are experiencing slowdown. And considering the dated graphics there's no good reason for the slowdown either.

Well, if you set it to 1600x1200 with all options on, then yeah.

I run it at 1024x768 without the shadows, and have it set to a constant 30 fps, and I've yet to have a problem.

HALO's graphics are still some of the best anyone's ever seen in a video game to date. They're even better than a lot of the newer games that come out.

Dated graphics, my ass.

The esdf setup is nice, but a lot of defaults are wasd, we learn the game on wasd, and don't want to relearn.

As it is, I have 20 keys outside of the WASD keys in reach, and memorized as to what they do in NS. (Like Z is "Let's move out!" and alt is "Gimme a fuckin waypoint, heah.", etc)

And thanks to the beautifully sexy 5 button optical mouse from Microsoft, I have everything else I need in order to play 90% of FPS games. Arrow keys my ass.

Or think of it this way: Yeah, you can reach home/end/ins/del/pgup/pgdn easy. But you could reach five other keys as well. Not to mention the Fkeys.

The graphics are dated. They're two years old. That's dated in PC gaming, and really dated in FPS gaming. When you compare it to games like UT2K3 and Unreal2, Halo looks even more dated.

And yeah, it has better graphics than some newer games. There's always going to be crappy games with bad graphics. Bad comparison.

But that wasn't my point anyway. IMHO, Unreal2 currently has the best graphics of any released game. Halo is nowhere near Unreal2 in terms of graphics, and I really doubt you can deny this. Its not even close. Yet, despite this, Unreal2 runs better on my system at a higher resolution and with more options turned on. And I'm not the only one, as this seems to be the general consensus concerning the game. There's no good explanation for this other than it was ported badly.

If you're running into performance issues, try this :

If you have a DX9 card (IE : GeForce FX, Radeon 9500 or better), change the shortcut to have -use20 at the end. If that slows it down, try -use14 or -use11. This changes the pixel shader version that you're using. -use20 makes you use Pixel Shader 2.0 (DX 9 cards ONLY!) which is prettier but slower. PS 1.4 and 1.1 are older, DX8 shaders but they can be faster.

If you're running anything lower than a Radeon 9000 or a GF4 or lower, you're either using Pixel Shader 1.4 or 1.3, depending on what your hardware can handle. Try starting the game with -use11 to see if that improves performance (Forces it to use PS 1.1)

EDIT : I found this info on the Gearbox technical forums, while searching for a way to bind the ENTER key.
