Yeah, in IMs I let a lot of things slide. Hardly capitalize stuff if I can get away with it, all that crap. I don't use shorthard (except for the occassional brb/afk), but I definitely type differently. I think that message boards require a bit more effort and composure. It's a slightly more formal environment, if only because what you write is going to be read. It's going to be read a lot.
It's kind of like starting a graduation speech with, "Hay duders how all my grandmas doin'?" I mean, you can, but yeah.
