Ok my PC perfoprmance is sorely lacking compared to my MAC. Time to bring it up to par.

Here are my choices. I can either upgrade from a P4 2.4Gh Proc to a 3.06 for about 360 bucks
or
I can upgrade from 512Mb of Ran to a full Gig for about 250 bucks.

Both will eventually be done. It is just a matter of which comes first.
I am leaning towards the Ram at the moment. Your opinion?

What type of ram do you currently have?

Without a question buy the ram first while its still cheap. Pricewatch has 512mb of PC2100 DDR listed for $54 a stick. Even a 512mb stick of PC3700 is only $94. I've never seen ram this cheap and it might not stay that way for long, buy now or risk paying a lot more later.

From the price he's quoting, I'm gonna assume he's using RDRAM (Rambus).

RDRam hasn't followed the same path as the rest if its the 1066mhz version he's looking for. That stuff is still damn expensive. Guess thats what you get for building/buying a rig with a pentium.

Yeah... 250 is a bit spendy for only 512 megs. It's gotta be pretty low end shit. Most likely 164 pin crap.

I recommend RAM first, CPU can follow.

I'd go for a 3.00 instead of a 3.06

just wait a little while for prices to drop. Although right now you may want to grab a new mobo/DDR as your upgrade. Pick up a new canterwood board, some fast ram, and that'll give you a performance boost, expescialy if you decide to go for a mild overclock on your CPU (well, you're replacing it anyway, right....)

Bite me.

No, Really. Bite me.

I wound end up spending to much moneyt that way to get the same performance increases. You know how stupid I think it is for people to overclock main Procs so I am not even considering that. Why would I want to bother upgrading all that when at best it would give me a couple percent increase over my current system with a faster processor. My board will support up to a 3.06W/Hyperthreading. It runs at 533 and yes it uses Rambus. I found out I was a bit high on the price. I can get two 256Mb chips from Samsung for 95 each.

processor will become cheaper in 4-5 months. Ram will not.

2.4ghz is plenty of fire power, 512MB is about average now.

I'd say ram.
