I'm watching the 6pm local news, and they're talking about how the military is gearing up (we've already sent a lot of the NC troops to other locations here and abroad, etc), and they show footage of one of those big honkin' hovercrafts powering down.

And I have to ask, what exactly do they use those things for? The strike me as big, slow, easily damaged targets.

Depending on where they are at training or maybe they can go over mine fields or something. Easy targets though.

What D said. Those suckers can carry M1 tanks and other stuff from a ship to land with ease. They aren't really MENT to be in fighting, but they have some guns (I think) mounted somewhere on them. Nothing big, just like an M60 to keep any sort of minor ground resistance at bay.
What's this thing do?
That would be sooo cool if it wasn't going to hurt us.

I've be on them before out here. and what D said is correct, top speed is over 30 knots, so it can go faster than some other types of ships. and this is with 2 full armed tanks aboard.

It's an easy way to get a tank from a boat to the shore.

And yes, they do transport tanks via boat.

Well I didn't think they hung tanks between a pair of swallows and flew them about. Hadn't given it a lot of thought, actually. So basically they send folks in to secure the beach head, then send in the hovercrafts to move the tanks to the beach?

Better than airlifting them in, given the weight of those suckers. Hmm

I wish I had a hovercraft. I'd pick up some serious chick action in that baby.

What D said. they mainly serve as a tender between large ships that they don't feel like beaching up in shallow water, basicly landing craft. I belive Norfolk or Dam Neck has a fleet of them, LCAV I think the designation is, my dad was Stationed in Norfolk for a while, used to see them training on them alot, pretty spiffy.

They did on spot about LCACs (Landing Craft Air Cushioned) on Mail Call. They can carry an ass-load of troops or equipment, farther inland and onto about 4 times the number of beaches around the world as conventional landing craft.

Tanks weigh alot only the biggest planes the military has can transport them one at a time. They may be relativly fast for their size, 40mph I believe, but they chug gas like nothing else. I believe they are only really good for landing tanks onto beach heads after they have been secured. And well they look cool.

That's where I saw it. Such a great show.
