Yes, I'm having major issues with my third box. It's only over here for a week, but the thing refuses to stay connected to the internet, or network, for more than aprox 3000 packets.

I have no clue as to WHY, and simply unplugging the cat 5 and then putting it back in will let it go for another 3k packets.

IPX and TCP protocols are installed... Thing can see other computers on the network, until the 3k mark. I just cannot figure out why it's not working right. If I do connect it to my cable modem directly, it won't work period.

HELP!!!

what I meant was that since you have multiple machines in the house, take the nic out of the bad box, drop it into one of the ones currewntly working fine, and see what happens. If the previously working box is no longer working, it's the NIC's fault, conclusivly. If the NIC from the bad machine works fine in a good machine, try taking a good NIC and putting it in the bad machine, if it still craps out, then you're looking at a software problem. However, if a good NIC works in the bad box, and the bad NIC works in a good box, then it's just a hardware incompatibility, and you're fooked, IMO.

But..if the good NIC works in the bad box and the bad NIC works in the good box, why not just leave them there?

well, 2 reasons:

1: it might not be his computer. He mentioned that it was only at his house for a week, and it might not be his to just mix and match components with.

2: I was thinking like a computer tech, and normally you don't just trade components with clients.

Using a router or hub?

I had the problem of connection with my laptop using a hub with my cable company (I can't use a router. It screws up the IP addy) and I had to go through a lot to finally have them figure out the third IP wasn't added to the cable modem.

So when it cycled, it was only authorizing two computers, because it only had instructions to do so.

Router, I dunno. I had serious problems with my cable company when I used a router, after they switched to using DHCP.

Well, it IS my mothers computer, and I built it for her. If it's having problems over here, it probably will have problems when I take it back over to her house and hook up her DSL.

I'm not using a router or a hub, I'm using a switch. About as simple as it can get, and cheap too.

But, I ran the internet connection wizard, set the sucker up, just like the box I'm currently using, and it just drops off like that all the time without any reason to do so.

Anyway, I got the new networking card, and I'll throw it in the box and set everything up in a few minutes here(after registering my second EQ account) and hope for the best. If it doesn't work out, I'll post in this thread again.

Thanks all for the ideas on what might be causeing the problems.

Well fuck, it's now sending but not reciving packets.... Goddamnit this is pissing me off... And I don't even have a disk to reformat the bitch with That's usually what I'd do right about now... And YES I would be allowed too, there's nothing at all on the computer right now other than the crap I have put on.

what kind of formatting utility do you mean?

something that'll just wipe the drive?

look for SEAGATE'S DISK WIZARD STARTER EDITION. It can do pretty much anything you need it to in terms of formatting and such, and it's a bootable floppy. Free download, just go find it.
