It gets rid of all the junk that you don't need on the buddy list, and adds a few other features. Transparency, message logging, and can change alerts and the like.

Did you have AIM running during the install?
That would require you to restart AIM.
Did you have the right version of AIM before you installed?
That might do something for it.
