I'm only three hours into the game so far, but I'm already able to tell that I'm playing a damn fine game.
My only complaint so far is that it's impossible to circle strafe and scan at the same time. While it's not that big a deal in most circumstances, against the second boss it makes things a little more annoying.
And now, the good. The graphics are absolutely wonderful. Cartoonish? Not at all. They're very well done, and I haven't encountered the least bit of graininess or chopiness. The environments are quite realistic, though Samus must have the best set of visor-wipers in existance to get off half the things that get splatted over the field of view...
The controls take a little bit of getting used to at first. My biggest problem so far is that I keep hitting X to jump instead of B, but that's just because I'm so used to using X to jump in SSB:M. I'll get out of that habit in a few more hours worth of play, and in the meantime, missiles aren't hard to replace.
So far, I'm really glad to have purchased this. Now I just need to get a GBA so I can try out Metroid Fusion...
And I take it I've been missed, KaL?
I hate you, and love you at the same time (For giving such good praise).
Imagine Normal RE gameplay.. ONLY YOU CAN BE TWO CHARACTERS AT THE SAME TIME! .. And stuff. Yeah. Lots of "omg hold this switch while the puny girl runs out and kills the giant monster!" puzzles, too.
And JooJoo, as for RPGs, I haven't gone looking yet for them... You'd be better off getting the PS2 first for the better library of games, but don't look past a Gamecube either, it has some very good ones.
(played it, didnt like the feel)
I thought metroid was a crappy fps, although I'm now a animal crossing addict and I want to play star fox/mario sunshine.
Maybe I'll get a gamecube next year...
Then after gaining control of the world, I'll reveal my plans to a young man with spiked hair who forms a party and eventually destroys me.
Remember the most important part of being an evil villain, is revealing your plans to somebody who can stop you with a mysterious past that you happen to be involved in.

Erodin stopped staring at Deedlit long enough to write:
I thought metroid was a crappy fps,
Just a warning.. Anyone who plays this game expecting to play a typical FPS, ala Doom/Quake/CounterStrike/UT/etc etc will be severly dissapointed and probably concider it utter crap. Although it is a FPS by design, it doesn't play like your typical lot. It doesn't even play like similar FPAdventures like System Shock. The controls are not laid out like typical shooters nor is it twitch oriented. It's not hectic and most of the game is designed around exploration. It is, by all means, Metroid as seen through Samus' eyes. It controls/plays/feels like Metroid, the only thing that is different is the view.
So if you go into it expecting a 'typical' FPS, forget it, cause it's pure crap by comparison. And 'typical' FPS gamers will find be severly turned off. Otherwise, this game kicks total ass, and you will be consumed for days to come... It is totally immersive, the Cut-Scenes are exquisite, the detail and small little extras like visor reflection add so much to the game it's not even funny. There is so much detail/lighting/eye candy that you can often find yourselves just 'looking' and nothing more. The controls are intuitive, and work exceptionally well for the style of gameplay that they were going for. It's relatively easy to pick up. This is a '10' game, and will probably remain as such for a while.

Azizza thought about the meaning of life:
Is it true that they turned Samus into a guy?
Umm.. No.
Actually, they made her quite attractive from you actually get to see of her.. The visor flashes are especially cool.

Black, it goes with most home setups and everything in them.
Although the Platinum one is spiffy and will be out soon.

Oh, and EB has a Platinum/Prime bundle for only $30 extra. [ 11-19-2002: Message edited by: Skaw ]
And JooJoo, Evolution Worlds will be coming out on GC, and it's going to be a 'standard' RPG (turn-based). If you liked Evolution on Dreamcast, I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Well shit...
You actually got something there before we got it here for a change Skaw.
Some of the Local shops around here hadn't even heard of it. One guy at the GameStop here said he was waiting for it too.. So I will now have to check again... That would be sweet.
How linear is the gameplay?
How does the weapon system work? Like the SNES Metroid?
Is there a grappling beam?
How is aiming done?
Dare I ask, Spider Ball?
Do you find yourself in corridors a lot or more out in the open? If the latter how many "invisible barriers" are there preventing you from exploring?
I still say the space pirates and all the bosses I've seen look downright doofy. [ 11-19-2002: Message edited by: Maradon XP ]

Yes.How is aiming done?
Aiming is done by either locking onto something within your view with the L button, or manually aiming with the R button.Dare I ask, Spider Ball?
It's got the morph ball, not so sure about spider ball.Do you find yourself in corridors a lot or more out in the open? If the latter how many "invisible barriers" are there preventing you from exploring?
From the demo, it was mostly corridors and enclosed rooms. Though seeing as how there are areas like icy cliffs and whatnot, there are going to be areas out in the open as well.I still say the space pirates and all the bosses I've seen look downright doofy.
Not at all.

Phantasy Star
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicals
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Skies of Arcadia
Camelot
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Pillage
Tales of the World
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Phantasia (No, not Fantasia. )
Gothic
Galleon: Island's of Mystery
Mage

Also, I'd really like to know how linear the game is and if you can bomb or break through to hidden areas. Basically, is there an explorative element.
By the way, Fae, the majority of those RPG's are remakes or ports, and the rest just make me ROFL [ 11-19-2002: Message edited by: Maradon XP ]

Well, considering I own it, yes.
quote:
Maradon XP had this to say about Tron:
Can you bomb through walls and floors? Secret rooms? If so, how is the polygon breakup near the areas you can bomb through? Can you pick out the secret entrance by noticing the misaligned polygon?Yes, in fact it's a vital part of the gameplay, and why the morphball scenes are third person. The grafic layout is so intense, you'd be likely to overlook or pass by most possible objects without thoroughly exploring your options.
How linear is the gameplay?
Non. It's just like metroids, there are linear functions, but it is designed that going back to previously explored areas later in the game garners benifits, options, and upgrades. It also has a hub system like most Metroids. You'll feel positively comfortable with the scheme.
How does the weapon system work? Like the SNES Metroid?
Yes, major upgrades, weapons inclusions, and swamping is required. Only difference is you'll see her swap out her weapons from her perspective. You'll still aquire the icebeam, etc and use them to your advantage in specific situations like you always have. As well as missles for certain doors, differen't firarms for certain doors, etc.
Is there a grappling beam?
Yes
How is aiming done?
Zelda-esque 'Z' Targeting, or Free Targeting. Up to you. Since it's not twitch reliant like typical FPS, you'll probably use visor scanning and Z-Targeting exclusively.
Do you find yourself in corridors a lot or more out in the open? If the latter how many "invisible barriers" are there preventing you from exploring?
Both, think Super Metroids layout and it's similarly split between confined and open. Very few barriers except for those specified to use certain techniques or items to open, ala missles etc liek all Metroid games.
I still say the space pirates and all the bosses I've seen look downright doofy.
I disagree, especially live. But to each his own. Riddley kicks ass, and most of the creatures almost perfectly resemble thier 2D Counterparts. It's very true to Metroid.

Um no they aren't. I just didn't include the subtitles of most of them. Most of them are sequals. With the exceptions of BG A which is a strait through port.
Tales of Phantasia is an all new Namco RPG, with Tales of Destiny, and Tales of World being ports.
Phatasy Star is a sequal/port.
Evolution Worlds (Sequel, to a decent RPG)
Lost Kingdoms (Fun, fun Strategy RPG)
Lost Kingdoms II (Sequel to LK1)
Phantasy Star (Sequel/Port)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicals (All new, pretty spiff looking RPG from Square)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (Port, and a bad one at that.)
Skies of Arcadia: Legends (Sequel)
Camelot (Dunno much about this one, it's been kept secret.)
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (Sequel, prefered taste. Not one of mine.)
Pillage (All new)
Tales of the World (Port)
Tales of Destiny (Port)
Tales of Phantasia (No, not Fantasia. Brand new update, pretty spiff looking, sequel)
Gothic (Port/Upgrade)
Galleon: Island's of Mystery (New)
Mage (Unknown)
1 more Un-named RPG from Namco (Obviously new, and Namco claims NGC exclusive.)
Also negating the fact that most games that do get ported to the NGC from the PS2 or XBox are upgraded, usually prettier, and more fleshed out.

Thats why I thought this was a crappy FPS, because I see it as an action/adventure game that happens to be in first person. The game was fun while I had a chance to play it, I just happen to have a grudge against all FPS games in general. Against most shooting games in general, anyways. I've seen enough guns to last me a lifetime.
Still, metroid prime was a neat action/adventure game while it lasted. I'll probably pick it up in febuary along with a gamecube.
Then after gaining control of the world, I'll reveal my plans to a young man with spiked hair who forms a party and eventually destroys me.

If I do buy a gamecube, it sure as hell won't be for RPG's.

They need to do a Bahamut Lagoon for the PS2.

Once again, they're all either ports or remakes, or they just look stupid. Even Crystal Chronicals, but then I have zero faith in all of Square's recent work.If I do buy a gamecube, it sure as hell won't be for RPG's.
There is only one remake.. And only 4 ports... (Two of which are updated/upgraded PSX releases)
Also besides the fact you have probably heard of/ seen anything having to do with less than half of those. Specially concidering Camelot, the new Namco one, and Lost Kingdoms II don't even have any press info regarding them besides the name.
The ones that are Sequels are all continuations of Decent RPG's that came before them.
And aside from a brief 5 second glipmse of Crystal Chronicles, nothing has been said/seen about it either.
And in comparison between two systems, ports are irrelavent in any case, and like I said most ports to the NGC from the PS2 or XBox are better than the originals. Which is more support to get the opposing system if you are looking at the same games on the original system.
You're just digging.

Are you sure about that? Tales of Phantasia was originally released on the Super Famicom (was never released here). Tales of Destiny was originally from the PSX, and I've rented that game a few times. Channeling rings + Tech Rings for everyone = Kick ass 4 player mode.
Tales of the World I never heard of.

ToP is being made as an entirely new game on the NGC, Tales of Destiny, and Tales of the World (Japan Only) were originaly PSX games, which is why I listed them as ports.

One of them, tentatively dubbed Tales of Phantasia GCN, is being called the next installment in the popular RPG series. While no storyline or gameplay mechanic details were announced, we do have the first movie and several screenshots showing off Tales of Phantasia's visuals and what appears to be traditional RPG gameplay."

I beat NeoDhaos with little or no trouble at all. Maybe it's cause I was crazy enough to go to the 20th something level of the Moria Gallery to get the Golden Armor.
