But my family is a tad low on cash at the moment, so what are some good parts that I could get for a total of about 700 bucks?

What do you have that can be used as of current, if anything? Even a monitor?

Also, how much kung fu does the system have to contain?

How about the case and the power supply? Fans? Other cooling system? Video card, Sound card? Modem? HD? Are you using the same mother board? Are you going to change your RAM, do you need to?

There, thats a good start.

This is an extreamly half ass job I just did.. I don't even know if the motherboard can take this config, but I assume so. This was just taken off what the prices would be if a place I sometimes get computers from built it. I picked out mostly the lower costing components. Not ment for an exact, but just for somehting to get a general idea to go off. I actually would.. almost suggest looking into a Best Buy or such, just because I only prefer these local places like this for more powerful computer parts/configurations.

I already have a pentium 4 and an asus a7s333 motherboard, plus a nice little fan that goes with it. Here's what else I'm looking at. Could someone give me a price for this stuff?

512 mb DDR RAM
GeForce 4 Ti4400 (4200?)
40 GB 7200RPM (sounds good)
I have a DVD player already
I have a floppy drive already
I have a case already
I have a DSL already
I have internet and LAN covered, hehe
The sound card sounds good
I have a keyboard already
I have a mouse already
I'm pretty scared of Windows XP, so I might stick with 98SE, but you never know.
I have a mouse pad already.

Total price?

Well I have to admit I have been able to play SOME DOS games, not all on Windows XP. And even when they do work they don't do sound, which suxxorz.

As far as Using windows XP, I do kinda like it, problem is it keeps randomly resetting windows when I play any game (especially EQ, which is bad for a quadding druid).

Conflict between my Sound Card and something, I have determined it to be. The problem here is that Windows XP determines the IRQ that the piece of Hardware uses by which slot, physically, on the motherboard the sound card takes. I'd need to switch my sound card into a different slot to get it to work. And I'm too lazy to do that. So I stick with Windows 98. It's done me well since I had it. Moral of the Story: Use Windows XP on a machine you build only if you know wtf you're doing, if not, windows 2000 is a good alternative, or Windows 98 is good too.

Er hehe, I know it's strange me posting like I've been here forever. I used to work phone tech support, so I know lots of problems associated with OS's is all, so I tend to go off on half-essays on computer related topics =).

And actually I have been around forever, I just haven't checked the boards or posted in over a year and a half. =)

that's not what i meant.

your sound problems aren't due to shoddy dos support. it's because you have a conflict with your soundcard.

and you're saying you were a techie?

Lol sorry, shoulda mentioned after my sound problems that I tested the dos programs thing out on a friend's computer that did work windows XP and EQ very well and they still didn't work (btw, the games I'm trying to run are The Elder Scrolls: Arena and Fade to Black, sequel to Flashback). If you're having good times with the Dos support in Windows XP, then more power to yah, it's just they never worked for me =/.

[Interjection] I have a DOS game that doesn't run under Windows 95. It was called "Crusaders of the Dark Savant". And as credit to how uncreative their marketing department was, they released a Windows 95 version and called it "Gold". Not "CotDS Gold". Just "Gold".

So don't count on Win98SE running ye olde DOS stuff any better than Win2K or XP.

If you're buying a new hard drive, and keeping the one you have, couldn't you have 98 installed on one and XP installed on another?

I think different Windows versions can be installed on different partitions in a drive even, but it's better if they're separate drives entirely.
