The original fairy tales are quite gruesome. Or if not gruesome, disturbing.

Like Princess Furball, or Allerleirauh, who had to marry her father because she was the only woman who could compare to her mother, and her father had promised her dying mother he wouldn't marry someone unless she could compare to her.

Or the fact that Cinderella's stepsisters not only tried the shoe on, but one cut off a toe and another a heel to get it to fit. Icky icky.

I do recall a mention of Sleeping Beauty being awakened by the suckling of an infant on her breast, but aside from websites, I've never found anything in any collection of tales I've ever read that gives this version of things.

I'm starting to think it's made up.

Not quite. Aesop's fables were more morality type stories than anything. Fairy tales were for entertainment, to record history sometimes, and they usually did have a hidden meaning, although it's often open to interpretation.

Aesop's fables always had a lesson.

I like a lot of fairy tales. I particularly enjoy the 'uncut' gruesome ones.

They provide interesting stories, as well as a lot of potential material for writers.

I liked the one were this little blonde bimbo of a girl gets eaten by a family of three bears for trespassing, eating their food, breaking their furniture and sleeping in their beds.

Also liked the one were these two chicks and thier mom befriend a bear, pick on a poor dwarf and eventualy end up killing him, the bear turns into a prince, takes the two girls to his castle, nails one while his brother nails the other. (Incase no one know this one, it's called "Snow White and Red Rose")

Hmmm. Well, if you meant things like those, I wouldn't exactly call them fairy tales. I liken them more to the tall tales of people like Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill, etc.

The Witches is a particular favorite of mine, however, and I also loved the movie that was done of it.

I think Deth would have something to say on that

The version I read was Scottish I believe. The first, that is. But I do believe it must have Russian origins, simply because the idea of the bear bridegroom is prevalent in fairy tales from Russia, and Scandinavian countries as well.

Of course, if you really want to look into it, the basis is even older than that, and Greek. Ever read the story of Pysche and Cupid?

Norweigan I could see as being quite reasonable.

But in the Cupid and Psyche tale, Cupid only revealed his true form at night. And Psyche was not allowed to see him. But she disobeyed one night, and looked at him by candlelight. Some of the candlewax fell on him, and he had to go away.

Psyche had to find him again, akin to that story. So while the folktale in that telling is Norweigan, the actual basis is much, much older.

I've never read it, but I've heard that the original Little Mermaid fairy tale is kind of freaky. From what somebody told me, she lures sailors to their death by...something. Kind of like the Sirens, I guess. And supposedly, whenever the mermaid gets on the land, it feels like jagged rocks cutting through her skin. Owchie.

...okay, I think you're a littte confused there.

The Little Mermaid did indeed fall in love with a man on the mainland. She went to the sea hag, sold her voice, and got legs. If she didn't get the man to fall in love with her by a certain time (3 days, or sometimes it's longer) she would become sea foam.

Whenever she walked on her legs it felt like a million needles stabbing her, that was true. She did rescue the man from drowning, but he was found on the shore by a woman from nearby. He thought her his rescuer and ended up marrying her.

The mermaid's sisters came to her with the way she could become a mermaid again. They had sold their hair to the sea hag, and the sea hag had given them a knife. If the little mermaid killed the man through the heart using that knife, and the blood fell on her legs, they would become fins again.

But the little mermaid couldn't do it. But when the time came for her to become sea foam, it didn't happen. Because of her goodness, she instead became a sea spirit, and was able to watch over the man as that.

That's the original tale, at least as I've found it in my readings.

Lyinar: Roald Dahl wrote "Revolting Rhymes" which was a collection of fairy tales, with alternate endings such as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, The three Little Pigs and some others i can't remember.

The best part of the book was "Little Red" turning the wolf from her story and the three little pigs into coats.

Had to rez this thread because Roald Dahl rules.

Roald Dahl's actually life (His service in the British Air Force) was very VERY interesting, quite good stuff.

He also had a short story about a man who had the ability to see through cards, and such, psychic abilities.. I forget the name of it, however I have a collection of his stories downstairs in my room.. I should go re-read it sometime.

Also, his schooling was quite interesting to read about as well, especially about how most of his teachers said he was a terrible at English class, and such
