Needless to say, I really, really like the game. It's like Baldur's Gate and Diablo 2 all rolled into one. The graphics aren't bad at all, and run very zippy on my setup. The combat is entertaining, and the "difficult-to-screw-up" character creation takes a lot of the stress out of making a new character with little D&D knowledge.
I have a few gripes though. One of the biggest being a common one to D&D games, that being that your gear is quite mundane. What's better than a Greatsword? Why a Greatsword+1 of course. Better than that? +2. ad infinitum.
If only they'd taken a page from Blizzard's Diablo 2 item system. I know I know, it would have violated the sanctity of the allmighty D&D ruleset. But frankly I care about an entertaining game, and rulesets can take a flying piss off a lunar crater for all I care.
Also, where the hell do they get off saying that helmets offer no added protection? And why doesn't my cloak show up when I wear it? Or my boots? AND WHY CAN'T I WEAR PANTS!? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY CAN'T I WEAR PANTS!?

NWN is made to hook people into playing regular DnD. Which will lead to the d20 system, and the d20 version of EQ. It's strange, but true.

Actually, there are variations. But, they tend to be higher level. I dunno if NWN has them, but if it does, expect them to start turning up around the time you're finding +3 - +4 weapons.

In DnD, your main AC is usually determined by your main armor (your torso). "Extra" armor such as helmets doesn't change that, but it does keep people from taking a called shot at your head to avoid the armor. That doesn't translate all that well to NWN however, so they just made them a style thing.

OK then!
Maradon, there ARE named items in the game. Quite a few, but ya don't find em till later. But when ya think about it, there are probably hundreds of magical longsword +1s out there in the world of D&D. Likely quite a few more
Pretty much, with a named item, there are only a few (more in some rare cases).
why aren't items like Diablo? (Say it was a magical bastard sword). There wouldnt be all that many effects for it, anyway. D&D doesnt do effects like Diablo where you can get an effect thats +1 to +10 HP, its effects are concrete. If you get a +1 weapon, its +1. If your weapon casts fireball, it casts fireball. Your +1 weapon doesnt vary its stats like in the Diablo Series.
Diablo's item system worked for the game it was made for. It wouldn't work well with a D&D game -- It would take a total reworking of the game. The game's mechanics are quite based around the +1-5 weapons. Say, a level 20 monk, if not hit by a +1 weapon or better, absorbs 20 damage a hit. Now, imagine the nightmare if there were hundreds of variations of a magic weapon: You would have to rework all of D&D to make things work
oh yeah.. my eyes hurt hella bad after playing AOE or my Star Wars version of it.

Actually DnD caters to any weapon having just about any type of effect. Any mage high enough, with the correct skills, spells, and desire can make a weapon with any said effect.
You can even have a sword that casts stinking cloud. Or an effect of mage armor that increases the users defenses.
In my game for instance, KaLourin aquired a sword that is sentient, and it's effects change every time he draws it. He rolls randomly to see what +'s -'s or additional effects it has.
The high end NWN game actually has quite a few of these weapons. It's just unlike EQ, Diablo, and similiar style games you actually are FORCED to earn it, and wait till you can use them.

They exist and you can find them.
Just not right away.
Tnaglewood Scims are an Example in NWN, or the Scythe of Continual Death is another. They are in the game. You just have a while yet.
Found 2 different named Kama for my Monk. Too bad they're pointless now and I'll probally never touch another Kama as they're only 1d6 and my monk is now 1d10 and a +1 magical weapon...

Thats the natural progression of a Monk.
Point is to eventually be a master martial artist. Even in the table top. Weapons become more than useless for a Monk after so many levels.

wrooooooooooong! (go rqg!)
the difference between DnD is that its magical items bear more signifigance
every yahoo doesn't run around with the "Godslaying War Axe of Indifferent Might"
but not every schmuck is gonna carry some pissant regular sword, so low end magic swords are called such
but high end ones, are named, and they -are- plentiful, they're just more difficult to get due to their increased power
this is what happens when you try to make a fantasy game as realistic as possible, instead of being brought into the world with the only sword that can behead the dark god *rolls eyes*

Nope, just click once to have your character target that mob and he will attack until it's dead or until you tell him to do something else.

edit: I'm confused by Palador's post. Are you implying that NWN would hook people into the tabletop game (nwn is 3rd ed as it is) which would in turn hook people into d20 EQ? [ 07-02-2002: Message edited by: Ka'Lourin D'thBlayde ]

Dude! Quit drawing conclusions about me where they aren't warranted!
Could it be that, maybe, I've never PLAYED a D&D game to the point where these things show up? *gasp!*
Could it be I was completely unaware of thier existence? *gasp²*

Yep. 3rd ed DnD is the basic version of the d20 system. Once you learn that, you can easily go to the other games based on the d20 system (such as Star Wars and the upcoming EQ game). One can lead to the other quite easily.
The real fun begins when you realize how easily things can be swapped between the different (well written) d20 games. Want an Iksar bounty hunter in your Star Wars game? That shouldn't be much harder to make than a human one. Same with a Wookie Barbarian.
The Jawa ShadowKnight/Sith Lord, however, I will leave to the munchkins.
Almost reminds me of the Palladium megaverse.
