Ok, few questions about firearms. First off, for all of you, inclding those who do not know the diffrence between a rifle and a gun. I am at a point in my life where I both have money to spend, and planning to move. So, what is popular opnion of firearms and how would people feel about someone who ownd firearms moving in close to them?

Next question for those who know a little more on the subject. Can you sugest me a good, reliable and cheap 12 gage pump action shotgun and bolt action 30-06. Ive found a Remingtom 870 shotgun that comes with 3 choke tubes and a fiber optic sight for around $250, and a Remington 700 siries for around $350. Can you tell me anything new about either of those?

For a minute I thought you were talking about the game and I was like "ehr.. wtf?".

Then it dawned on me.

Don't move to Europe Most countries don't allow people to own firearms.

Both are great firearms.
I would however recomend .308 over the 30-06. You will find a wider range of loads and the ammo is much cheaper. THe only advantage to the 30-06 is that you can get slightly heavier bullets. The .308 will max out at 180 and MAYBE 200 grain. The '06 maxes out at 220 or so. Beyond this you will find that both are very close in preformance.

As for your question about how people would feel. Well. This is perhaps not the best place to ask that. There is a bit of a shift to the far left around here. Not by all people but by a few with the biggest mouths. As a rule of thumb people in the U.S. don't mind firearms at all. Avoid New York or Kalifornia (yes I spell it with a K) Indiana and Kentucky are the two states I have the most experience with. And with very few exceptions people are open to firearms. When the Million Moron March.. Uhh I mean million Mom march Tried to come through here they were told to pack it up and go home.

Suchii was right on staying away from the Suburbs. Soccer moms would freak out the first time you tried to go to the range.. Buddy of mine had the police called on him because he had a "Machine Gun". New Neighboor had freaked out when she saw him taking his AR15 to the range. Of course when the police showed up they laughed and asked to see his guns not to check them to see if they were legal but because they liked to shoot as well and were interested in that type of Firearm.

You will find that it is really only a few people who will cause you any problems. Overall the Nation is very accepting of Firearms ownership. Also keep in mind that the U.S. Goverment has recently reversed its stance on Civilian Ownership. Ashcroft up and said that we are going to follow the Consitution and that it is the right of any Law abiding Person in the US to own Firearms.

I tend to agree on the .308>30-06 issue, and i'd say that if you are moving into a suburb/non rural setting, invest in a lockable, hardcase, that way you look nice and responsible to the neighbors (sp?)...

If you're ever in my neck of the woods, come skeeting, and we'll both get schooled by my sister (she's a VERY good shot).

anyhoo, happy trails.

When we moved in, there were these crazy people next door.

How crazy? When they were finally evicted, they found that they had no toilet, but were instead pooping through a hole in the floor into the basement. THAT crazy.

Anyway, the crazy guy once took to stomping around on our porch breaking our patio furnature. He would not leave. Well, not until my dad was forced to persuade him by gunpoint. He never came back.

Not only that, a house two doors down from me was robbed. The family was home. Could have easily been my house.

I would not put money on that assumption if I were you. I am not a violent person but if you breakito my house that makes you a threat to me and my family. I dont' take kindly to threats. The choice for me would not be to shoot them or not to shoot them. It would be which gun to use.

For shotguns the Rem 870 has a very nice slide action on it. If you want to go for the gusto Mossberg has a DA slide shotgun now also, but I am sure they are gonna be proud of it price wise.

.308 vs 30-06 Are you hunting or just target shooting? Or just want something to get in a clock tower and take a few out...just kidding...damn...I am in Texas...chill. Anyway .308 ammo is alot cheaper also you can buy battle packs of it in bulk for cheap and get quality rounds... You can pick up Hirtenberger fairly well priced and it is very reilable at gunshows. The Portuguese is kinda chancy....or at least I have ran across was not as reliable as the Hirt ammo.

Also...on the matter of opnions of firearm owners and so forth. My view...An Armed Society is a Polite Society.

Actually yes I have had to pull a gun on someone. It was one of the most frightening moments of my life.. I almost pissed my pants. However that does not mean I would not have pulled the trigger. I told him not to take another step towards me and him and his buddy turned tail and ran. We both got lucky. If he would not have listened to my warning then I would have shot him. I would not have been happy or proud of it. But I woudl have done it.

Nothing wrong with that. Every person is different. If you know you could not shot someone then don't carry a gun. Hell if think you might not be able to then don't carry a gun.
Every person is different with different morals and emotions. I know that I could shoot someone if need be. I also know I would secondguess myself for a long time afterwards. But I woudl rather that then be dead..

ok, so .308 > 30-06....how bout a make and model?

Im mostly intrested in target shooting, and poassiably some hunting in the furture. And no consideration to how it will help me defend myself, I dont plan to shoot at people for any reason.

{edit} for the post above I didnt see, shooting someone in the leg is really hard to do. Better to get some shotgun shells loaded with rock salt so its harder to miss, but still not kill them.

For Target Shooting you are much better off with the .308. Since it is the standard NATO round you can find TONS of surplus stuff out there. 20 rounds will cost you a couple bucks. '06 will run you more along the lines of 10.00 for 20 rounds.
The Remington 700 is a solid Choice. Savage and Howa are also solid weapons. Although the triggers are not as clean as the Remingtons.
Can you let me know your budget a little better and I can give you a better Idea of what rifle and scope.

If not seriously provoked, I would have no need to.

A burglar/mugger/anyone else threatening my family/household would be considered 'seriously provoking' me.

What Azizza said, the 700 is the most solid bolt action in the world, not many experts will disagree, as for a shotgun you need to specify what you want to do with it, home defense, skeet, trap, goose, duck, whatever, and price is a BIG deal on shotguns, most run $200-$500 but for home defense your prolly looking at $300-$1200 and I have all kinds of suggestions about those. As far as target shooting goes buy a cheap .22 like a Ruger 10/22 or try to find a browning lever-action. Ammo is dirt cheap there fun to shoot all day because they have no real recoil, and some people get very serious with their 10/22's and there are a multitude of customizations available, if your interested in more high-dollar target shooters PM me and Ill look into it further, My uncle is an Avid Target shooter and I can give you several places to look for the high-end elitist type junk =P

I already have a .22, and Im pretty good with it. I do shoot all day with it, but isnt really acturate at much of a range. I'm looking for a target rifle for 150-300 yard, but havnt got much to spend and need the rifle and scope. The 700 siries I found is asking at 320, but have a slightly damaged stock (a little grive near the foward sling harnass), so they'll sell it for 280. It comes with an open iron sight, but is taped for scope mounts on the reciver.

As for the shotgun, Im planning on target shooting (trap and/or skeet depending on how much skill is left), and possiably phesant and duck hunting.

Just to be clear on what I have is a Remingtom (dunno the model) .22 long rifle, and a Winchester 1890 model 12 gage pump, but that is getting to be rather old (made in 1912 or so), and the linkage from the slide to the action is getting very worn, so I cant pump it with any speed, totally useless for skeet (or trap...the one with 2 pidgeons). Plus, the thing kicks like a mule, and has a very hard stock plate.

As long as the barrel quality is good on the 700 thats a sure bet, and you can always modify and upgrade it till your heart is content. As far as shotguns my knowledge goes only as far as "tactical" shotguns.
