.. So, google makes IE crash, I have almost no memory left, and yahoo instant messanger won't run at all. (which is important, cause I use it to see Chris.)

So, what do I do? I back up everything, and reformat.

I reinstall Windows 98.

I turn on my computer... and what do I find? It won't accept my modem. No drivers, wont' even say it exists. Also, it's locked into 2 or 16 colors, and in 600x480.

Which means it doesn't see my vid card. So, I call Bajah, having no clue what to do. He talks to me, and... Can't figure anything out. (nothing against him, he tried ) but.. my modem goes into a brown slot shorter then my white PCI slot. Why, I have no clue. So, I took out my tiny modem, and put in a regular one, into a PCI slot.. then I tried to put it back together, and....

about 3 of my pins in my mouse are bent. So I manage to fix them, turn on camp again, and then shut it down after fiddling with the drivers. And after I turn it off, it ends with a high pitched, loud whine coming out of it, which dies after about 4 or 6 seconds.

Sounds like it's going to explode.

I come down, get mom off her comp, tlak to bajah more, go back, check and make sure that nothing is touching the cooling unit... and nothing is, and whine is quieter, but still there. so it's now completely unplugged.

Also, it tried to start in safe mode the last time I started it up.

Then, my mother basically says that it's my fault it's broken, since "I'm on it so much."

Weee.

(1) That's a CNR Modem. Technically superior to a PCI modem, but not really popular yet. Technically nothing wrong with using it, but you *WILL* have to have the MB drivers and the modem drivers before windows will see it.

(2) Sounds like your PSU is on it's last legs. The last time I heard a whine like that was shortly before a 350W PSU I had blew out in a puff of blue-grey smoke. Don't know how long it's going to last you.

I dunno. all I know is that it won't read it.

And I'm not supprised. it's just one thing, then the next.

My sister's HD died, so I'm gonna try switching my HD over to her old setup, but that won't help my driver problem, since she has same modem,a nd such.

*sigh*

If IE crashed, and you were out of memory...why not just reboot?

I did. over and over and over.. and.. how will rebooting solve memory probs?

I reformat to get rid of the little bits of progs that stay.. and defrag made comp freeze, too, so I coudln't do that....

Memory or disk space?

Memory. RAM. Volatile memory. Wipes clean when you reboot

If you're out of disk space, delete stuff. don't think a full wipe was nessesary. Have you ever wiped it before? If so, and you got it all working again, you must have the nessesary driver disks right?

Could there be a virus causing this problem? Eats up extra HD space, and messes up Windows?

It's possible. What AV do you have?

R.I.G. is most likely right about the PSU. I'd replace that and if the drivers for the CNR modem are not forthcoming, I'd purchase a new modem for the PCI slot.

New Power Supply: Maybe about 30 bucks
New PCI Modem: Also about 30 bucks, depending.

Also, next time you uninstall/delete files, try running the windows defrag program. The reason this helps, iirc, is that when you delete files ou don't actually erase the information, just the tag that says "the file is here"(which prevents it being overwritten normally). The defrag will also help just making your FS cleaner

Hope a lurker can help

Going to sound stupid here...but did you check your temporary internet files? You'd be surprised how much crap builds up in there. Can eat up 2 gigs of space in a few weeks if you do heavy browsing.

*smacks head* Forgot that. Like in the xp thread, check paging file too(virtual memory). Default for older versions of Windows is suck the hard drive into the void.

2 megs of space, even. Bah. Anyway it can eat up a lot of space pretty quick depending on your browsing. On my old computer I cleared out something like 50 megs of space in one go because I hadn't cleaned it out in a while, not including cookies. Now I religiously go through them once a week.

You can set a hard cap to the amount Windows is "allowed" to store in there. On my old computer I had it set to 20 megabytes after I found that I had 500 megabytes of temporary internet files. It was bad. Now I have it capped to 100MB, becuase I have more space.

And jeaden, if I remember correctly, older versions of Windows without a user-defined amount of virtual memory set will grab the largest unfragmented chunk of harddrive it can find.

This works fine after a fresh reformat, as nothing is fragmented. But after awile it gets worse and worse, and Windows eventually begins to run like absolute shit.

I have nothing more to add. Okay.
