I leave my computer on all the time... but ever since I switched to XP, I always come home to a fully locked up system.
2k Pro didn't do this, and I did a direct upgrade.
Help plz.

Verily, Kegwen doth proclaim:
direct upgrade.
Sorry man, but those are notorious for fucking things up.

Sadly.
One being a rather exhausting Win2k Pro install. Takes forever to find ALL the drivers you need...

This is why I have a LAN.

*points to his Linux box that's dual booting Linux Mandrake and Win2k Server*
That's my backup bitch.

Hmmmmm, try using it now? And why the dual boot? Remove Win2K from it!
Dude.
No.
It's not a Home vs. Pro issue. Not even close. Sorry.
I upgraded, and now I suffer the consequences for it. Upgrading with Home edition isn't any better.
You could try disabling "Fast Switching". To do that:
control panel => User accounts => "Change the way users log on or off" => Uncheck fast switching
If that doesn't work, try turning off the "ask for password on resume" feature:
control panel => power options => Advanced tab => Uncheck "ask for password yadda yadda" box
If that doesn't work, try asking someone who knows what the fuck they're talking about [ 04-25-2002: Message edited by: Maradön? ]
Never been kicked to the login. Only time it's ever locked up is when I was fucking with the FSB and voltage last night.
So that kind of thing is hardly a routine result of a simple upgrade.

I was just messin with ya. Try what Mara said. That'd prolly work. Or check your power settings.. Like, when the computer goes into standby, what devices bring it out of standby, etc. etc. Other then that...

I'm using Pro delphi, not ONE problem AT ALL.
Sometimes even corrupted file errors will carry over.
Basically, upgrading an installation isn't a bad thing, but it's only as good as your current installation.
A full reformat is a bit more like wiping your ass. All the useless .dll's and temporary files that get accidentally created or accidentally not removed are cleaned off (and they can accumulate into a large ball of crap over time), and all your settings are restored to factory default.

Same here, I did an upgrade from WinME and it works fine.
Full install Xp rules over all. Also check your paging file settings. If not controlled, windows can sometimes use 100% of HD space for virtual memory, which will lock you up(on earlier versions, I control paging file so I haven't had the problem on xp yet )
See if you can determine exactly how long it's taking. Might help you locate and fix the problem.

Cold boots are the single most strenuous thing a computer does. EVER. It's not good to cold boot that often. Wears out the hardware faster.

Which is one reason why I kept my DSL modem on 24/7.
That and the switch is a bitch to reach.
