Resolve to brush your teeth after you eat ANYTHING. You'll find you're A) snacking a lot less and/or B) your teeth will be much cleaner.

Everytime you eat, just think about weather you're hungry or not. I do it, and it helps me a ton. It isn't very fast, and it doesn't put a lot of pounds off, but its easy, and doesn't take a wierd diet or a lot of excercizing.

Eat more fruits as opposed to fatty/high-calorie foods. When the need arises to eat sweets, just go to sleep.

Better nutrition and more exercise really is the only solution.

You shouldn't exercise too much, too soon, however, as that can lead to injury, or to becoming fed up with the program. Work up to vigorous exercise.

Cutting calories too far back is the other common mistake. Eating too little freaks your body out, and causes it to lower your metabolism.

Moderating your eating, combined with exercise, will show results rather quickly.

The problem with high protein/low carb diets is that much of the weight loss is muscle rather than fat. Additionally, there are potential other health risks.

~~~
Forgot to add in the earlier: don't think in terms of losing "weight," but rather in terms of losing fat. It's another common mistake to obsess over weight, when it's (probably) the inches that really matter.
I used to eat a LOT. I mean like a 18 oz. steak, baked potatoe, salad, side dish, and dessert, then say "I'm hungry!" 20 minutes after I finished.
Two things worked for me. First, eat what you want in moderation. Yeah, an extra scoop of mashed potatoes would be good, but your belt would break. That kinda thing.
Also, having milk and OJ instead of something to eat works well. Instead of going upstairs and fixing a sandwich, I'd take a swig of milk, or a gulp of OJ, and it'd calm my stomach for a few hours. More often then not you're more thirsty then hungry.
A friend of mine has a weight loss philopisy. If you get hungry, Drink a glass of water. Then drink another. If you still feel hungry, drink another glass. Then, if yer still hungry after all that, yer probably actually hungry. Either way, drink another glass of water.
I've lost more then 10 lbs. since christmas, and I've eaten pretty much anything I want/can eat.
Good luck, Sol.
Well I've never been fat on account that I don't like eating when I'm not hungry (well duh!) Like I don't eat anything until my stomach starts to growl:P But I'd suggest to get up and exercise in the morning and whenever you have those urges to stuff your mouth with something starts to chew on gum or something (just don't swallow) Usually when you're bored you like to snack on something to move your mouth start chewingon gum ^-^ If that doesn't help imagine the food you're eating as something extremely disgusting (soup=vomit food=cow brains or something) It might help if you are like me who's mental images are very strong. If none of this helps be like my dad who quit smoking with will power. Have the will to do it and know why you want to diet. Tell yourself you have to do this and have confidence.
Oh well that sounded wayy to long and boring. I wouldn't expect you to go half way through this :P Ok enough of me blabbing stuff I've read.
As much as I love you Bloodsage I disagree... if a low carb diet is done correctly all you lose is fat.
I lost 90 pounds on the Atkin's Diet, and have studied low carb eating and all that it entails quite thoroughly. My father lives low carb because of his Lupus.
It is a quite wonderful way of eating if you know what to do and take into consideration the supplements your body requires.
Try cutting out soda, or at least reducing it to only one or two cans a day. I dropped about 10 pounds just doing that and drinking water instead. I got the idea from a co-worker who'd done the same thing with similar results.
140-170 Calories per 12oz can * "X" cans per day = lotsa extra calories. I figgured I was drinking 2 big macs a day.
I've lost 35 lbs since last summer. Of course, I had a little help.
I signed up with a personal trainer. I do two workouts a week with cardio exercizes spread out between.
I also eat a lot of protein and cut down on glycemics (carrots and potatoes). It seems to work for me.
What I've been trying to do is to eat a bit less (generally I snack alot once I get home from school)...but it's hard because when I have a really bad day, the first place I go is the damned refridgerator.
My weight is funky. Every time I eat more than 5 Mounds minis a day, my weight goes up. Every time I eat less than 2 Mounds minis, I lose weight until I got 135 lbs.
Yeah, if you ever take a biochemistry course, you'll learn both why the Atkins diet makes you lost weight, and why that's not necessarily a good thing.
I'd explain, but I don't have my flowchart with me.
