Hmm...I have mixed feelings.

It seems good that we're removing a threat...but I think we're acting a tad too hasty here.

I have suspected that perhaps the anthrax contained in the terrorist letters came from Saddam's stockpile. I wonder if that is the case, and I wonder if the gov't has some evidence leaning that way.....

However, Saddam is a danger to his people and ours. George Senior should have finished the job, and I am fine with a course of action that does not involve a prolonged ground war or large numbers of civilian casualties. Only what's necessary to accomplish the task at hand.

I dunno about this... Im a warhawk by tradition, but there has been no recent provocation i can see. I definately think the action is a good overall thing, but is now the time for action? We need to take the war on terrorism to ALL the world's terrorists. But i still remain undecided on Saddam.

I doubt it...
Despite some minor bickering we have to much world wide support right now.
Even the shadow of proof would be enough right now for us to go in and kick some ass.
Lets not forget that Sadam is not even all that popular with the Arab nations.

Doubtful.

Once more into the breach, my friends, once more. We'll close the wall with our dead. In peace, nothing so becomes a man as modesty and humility, but when the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitate the action of the tiger, summon up the blood, disguise fair nature with rage and lend the eye a terrible aspect.

Well, this is one of the better times to do it, because generally, popular opinion is behind him, and this can EASILY get lumped into the 'war on terrorism' business. Getting rid of Hussein has probably been something that has been wanted, but now we have the possibility without too many domestic reprocussion.

Blah blah blah.

Grammar is your enemy! - While being able to understand someone's sentences might seem like a good idea for a proper essay, complaining on a forum scarcely leaves time for such trivialities. Write fast! You're angry, grrr! Make that show, and forget about things like capital letters, punctuation, and verbs.

China isn't as big a threat as people seem to think. Yeah they're communists, yeah they're superpatriots of their own system...on the other hand they're a much more pliable communism than the USSR ever was. They're experimenting with capitalism and other such things. Yeah there are still issues there...but it's not the Cold War all over again.

Well, I think that's a good step, perhaps, but like Gork said, we should go after ALL of the world's terrorists, not just ones in the Arab nations. We probably have American terrorists right here and now.

The Chinese government established by Mao and continued through Deng Xiaoping and Xiang Zemin (I know these names have many different spellings and mine is likely wrong) has been responsible for approximately 30 million deaths in the past 40 or so years, more than any other regime in the history of man, particularly during the "Great Leap Forward" and the Cultural Revolution.

I understand your point regarding "threat levels," but this is not a regime that's "getting there." While certain important changes have been made, free thought is still suprressed on a daily basis and there is still blood on the leadership's hands.

International policy is soft because they make cheap importable stuff and have a high rate of economic growth every year.

Well, we had no clearance from the UN Security Council to take Baghdad during Desert Storm. It only went as far getting the Iraqis out of Kuwait. And just dropping the hammer on Saddam is a tricky proposition at best. It's not like it's a sure thing he's gonna be replaced by a Jeffersonian democrat if he croaks. For those reasons, the attempted removal of a foreign head of state is not undertaken lightly.

And that doesn't begin to address the whole "Iraq as a counterweight to Iran" thing, which could be a whole other essay on it's own.

He's just showing off now. I think he wants to be able to say that he could do it when his daddy couldnt.

And of course he's picking a good time, when we are at war with terrorists, it's a good cover to start wars with others nations...

He's going to have it rough with Iraq. The other countries of the world jumped on board for a war against terrorism. Worked nicely against Afghanistan, and we're helping to build them back up. Going to be tricky getting everyone on board with Iraq, especially to topple a regime.

Besides the US can only help rebuild so many countries, even with foreign aid. And I tend to think Callalron's right about balancing Iran. The middle east works. It's a hive of treachery and troublemakers, yeah, but generally it's treachery and troublemaking that balances itself. Iraq hates Iran, the breakaway Soviet states (like Uzbekistan) are still trying to figure things out and get stable, everyone hates Israel, and Israel keeps the Arabs from pushing in. In the middle you get the relatively laid back Saudi Arabia. They don't declare war on the outside in any meaningful way, and tend to balance each other out because they're so caught up in infighting. Knock out a significant element like Iraq and whether you want to or not you've just jumped in really deep situation of having to balance everything else out.

Be like the Central American regimes or Cuba. Topple one regime and twenty, maybe thirty years later you're still dealing with the assholes who took over after them who aren't any better.
