That was when they would be able to figure out if they had enough food to last them through the winter.
If they had just enough, no real feast, but a celebration of the fact that they would make it.
If they had more than enough, then a feast to celebrate.
If they didn't have enough, then a feast before dying. If you're not going to make it, there's no point in saving it back any more.
