Who all go to participate in the beta weekend that just finished? What were your impressions of the game? Who figures they're going to sign and play at release?

My take: First game in a long time that you could potentially consider as a WoW killer with a straight face. Although I think we all know WoW's not going anywhere soon. Bioware seems to have gotten things right for the most part. More options in character creation would be nice, as would more playable races (Rodians, Nautolans, Ithorians I'm looking at you), but I guess you gotta save something for expansion packs down the road. The characters are, as one poster said on the SWTOR forums "basically humans with different paint jobs".

Games interface looks clean and functional and it's actually nice that they made a point of going with a non-cartoony look for the game. I played a Jedi Knight and the first 10 levels were about standard MMO fare. Learn the game get your inital skills and gear and prep yourself for venturing out into the wider galaxy. The big difference was the writing and story. NPCs don't give you a general "go kill x number of y critters" or "gather so many of z type flowers/rock/whatever". There's on-going story and how you complete a guest, the choices you make and the things you say and do all affect your character and your relationships. I actually cared about what I was doing and why. Lots of voice acting and cinematic cut scenes make it feel like you're playing a Star Wars movie.

I managed to get my Jedi up to level 17 and still didn't get a chance to try crew skills (crafting). But apparently you send your companions out to gather resources and craft, while you sit back and reap the benefits and profit. They will also take you trash loot to a vendor and sell it for you, so you don't have to break from questing and hoof it back to town. Thumbs up for those last to ideas.

Overall, I'm down for playing this one. Who's with me?

It's a fun game and I will definitely play it. I just wish they weren't taking down SWG.

Oh, I'll play for sure. Despite multiple invitaqtions I've avoided the beta so far, because I burn out on MMOPRGs so very quickly these days. The last few MMORPGs I have tried out I could stand something between 2 hours and an afternoon. I really hope that won't happen with SWTOR because of its better presented story.

Edit: Correction: I've played DCUO for 18.4 hours after it became free to play. The gameplay is quite refreshing. For a while.

Be aware you also need to message the guild leader (via the TOR website message system) to let them know you know me, otherwise he will just refuse the entry.

Now that the NDA is lifted. I've been in long term beta for almost 2 months now and I love the game. VERY immersive. I find myself trying to only play a couple hours and walk away 4 or 5 hours later... my wife is going to kill me! I have yet to even group with anyone because the solo content is so much fun. I hear the group / raid content is loads of fun too but I just haven't been focused on it. The individual storylines are very compelling, you just HAVE to finish the next quest to see what happens next! Or maybe if I make this choice, the hot companion slicer chick will like me better. If they had JTL type space flight I'd be in heaven. Right now I avoid space...

They're having a few issues right now with login server and some of the long term characters were not able to be played over the last weekend. Hopefully this close to launch, they'll have those final kinks worked out. Will be a month or so until I can get my new computer built so I'll have to slog along as best I can in the game...

I didn't really care much for the beta since it was not a multiplayer kotor, but maybe I just don't like mmos now.

SWTOR cannot kill WoW. Only WoW can kill WoW. And WoW has been regularly stabbing itself deeply in the chest every month for the past year.

I was about to disagree..

Then I remembered that, yeah... last year about this time I was embarrassing myself at the midnight release by absurdly dominating the trivia. At least I got a window decal for it. Sadly I've just recently thrown it away.

I'd love to see WoW's subscriber numbers over the next 6-12 months. Not that I expect to see millions of subscribers suddenly cried out in terror and then were silenced (ha!), but to see if there's a continued erosion of WoW's subscriber numbers and how steep it is.

WoW will never Fully die, Like Ultima Online and Everquest it will become the undead; Still having enough subscribers to warrant the server costs and the occasional expansion, but nothing to set the world on fire. However is still see it being two or three years it really starts to transition to that state. If Mists of Pandaria is real bomb and they do the same bad planning they did for Cataclysm it could happen sooner.

---Which I am wondering if I am the only one feeling like they must have had some shift in management that has them pushing their product out too quick? I mean they left the story line in Vashj'ir hanging as far as I know, and said fuck it all to putting in the raid zone they planned. Same kind of feeling I got with Uldam, after the awesome Indiana Jones quest line in the zone it felt like there was supposed to be more to it, and the events in at least some of the 5 mans there are kind of unexplained. To Me Cataclysm had the same feel playing it as did Earth and Beyond, kicked out the door to soon with too little.

I don't think you will see that until after 12 months due to the Diablo 3 deal they have going. There will be some, but that is going to retain quite a few subscribers.

Yeah, if you're looking for something that plays nothing like WoW, SWTOR ain't it.

On the other hand, I still like the way WoW plays, and really liked the different feel SWTOR had to it.

And SWTOR will likely benefit from this greatly.

Sometimes I wonder if Blizzard actually understands why people liked LK and BC. The design stance they've taken over the entire course of the Cataclysm expansion and moving on to Pandaland says to me that they do not.

Yes. I see no reason why the above mentioned companies handle stuff so differently than say Activision/Blizzard.

However, in the light of this year's hacking-bonanza, I think I have to approve of their paranoia.
