At least they had the good sense to kill the worst character.

Still, it doesn't feel very "mortal kombat" when it's so down-to-earth.

As a creepy action movie, doesn't look like it would be bad.

As a part of the Mortal Kombat universe... wtf?

So they're skipping MK1 and going straight to MK2 stuff... ok, then why is Tsung in charge? Goro or Kintaro? All for Cage being killed off at the start.. but I would have thought that Jax and Sonya would have been talking with Kano there at the beginning...

damnit, I'm overthinking this..

Hrmm... will bear watching further to see how it turns out but it seems they are doing with it what they have done in the past with certain video game or book-to-movie translations by toning down the supernatural/fantasy aspects of the story in question to make it more 'real-world' or accessable to a mainstream audience.

Scorpion as the 'hero', huh? Never pictured that one.

Wasn't Mortal Kombat the movie that should've sucked, but instead was surprisingly okay?

Yeah, it was a horrible thing called Mortal Kombat Annihilation. It took the plots of the 2nd and 3rd games and mashed them up. It ended up just being one big 'How many characters from the 2nd and 3rd video games can we insert into this movie?!'. The only good thing about it was that Johnny Cage got killed right off the bat.

Heck, part of the movie was devoted to Liu Kang going off to find Nightwolf, the Native American fighter, to learn how to use an Animality so he could defeat Shao Kahn. An Animality!!! I was expecting to see someone try to pull off a Friendship finisher after that...

I concur. While I thoroughly enjoyed the first Mortal Kombat movie, MK:A was abysmal.

What the? Even the first movie resembled the game story better than this, haha

Also, the reason that the Mortal Kombat movie wasn't terrible was because the game it was based off of was already highly embarrassing and barely coherent, so they could just throw in the 2-3 paragraph long universe and then add anything else they felt like and it would seem like it still made sense.

Haha if the Mortal Kombat games didn't have plots then it wouldn't be possible to get the characters utterly wrong and mix up the backgrounds, however it is, and despite the complete simplicity of the MK universe they still managed to fuck it up (besides that Johnny Cage was an actor at some point)

The Mortal Kombat story is about as complex as Masters of the Universe, however that means you can still manage to mess it up.

MK: Alternate dimension filled with various fantastical races and magic, mystical eastern mumbo jumbo about balance and "you're in a tournament"

MotU: Post-apocalyptic planet, technology mixed with magic, evil overlords from Despondos, annoying talking animals, etc.

This movie is basically like making the Departed and calling it Masters of the Universe because people fire guns at each other and there are good and bad guys
