Weren't the colonial marines patterned after the marines from Heinlen's Starship Troopers (The awesome book, not the shitty movie/ad)?

Yes.

Not long after Aliens' release, Heinlein was approached about doing a Starship Troopers movie. He turned it down, citing Aliens as having already done space marines as well as could be done.
