Settles what? If you mean whether they are authentic, then yeah, it definatly does.

What is scary is that there are photos and videos that the military has that they won't even release, because they are even worse than what is already out. Rumsfeld said it will only make things worse, and he is probably right.

Rumor is that one of the videos is of a military guy raping one of the few female prisoners. I doubt it, but these withheld videos/pictures must be pretty bad.

This is probably one of the more important parts:

quote:
6. (S) I find that the intentional abuse of detainees by military police personnel included the following acts:

a. (S) Punching, slapping, and kicking detainees; jumping on their naked feet;

b. (S) Videotaping and photographing naked male and female detainees;

c. (S) Forcibly arranging detainees in various sexually explicit positions for photographing;

d. (S) Forcing detainees to remove their clothing and keeping them naked for several days at a time;

e. (S) Forcing naked male detainees to wear women’s underwear;

f. (S) Forcing groups of male detainees to masturbate themselves while being photographed and videotaped;

g. (S) Arranging naked male detainees in a pile and then jumping on them;

h. (S) Positioning a naked detainee on a MRE Box, with a sandbag on his head, and attaching wires to his fingers, toes, and penis to simulate electric torture;

i. (S) Writing “I am a Rapest” (sic) on the leg of a detainee alleged to have forcibly raped a 15-year old fellow detainee, and then photographing him naked;

j. (S) Placing a dog chain or strap around a naked detainee’s neck and having a female Soldier pose for a picture;

k. (S) A male MP guard having sex with a female detainee;

l. (S) Using military working dogs (without muzzles) to intimidate and frighten detainees, and in at least one case biting and severely injuring a detainee;

m. (S) Taking photographs of dead Iraqi detainees.

It certainly doesn't help us rebuild Iraq. It is arguable that some of them used to like us after we toppled Saddam. Also, its not like everyone in the more moderate Islamic countries like Jordan hate us. We shouldn't totally give up on having diplomatic relations with some of the more moderate Arab factions.

These recent events are damaging even that. The only people who will probably always like us is the Saudi Royal Family.

Yeah, it was so horrible I refused to believe it. It's a good thing these five people have been weeded out.

Sadly for the liberal spin doctors, it's hardly a case against US involvement in Iraq.

Because history certainly hasn't taught us that things like this have happened for centuries (obviously without the videos/photographs to show to the world).

It was never claimed otherwise. In fact, Rumsfeld asked NBC(I think it was NBC. Whoever got ahold of the photos first) to delay releasing them one day so the Military could get their evidence and facts in order to immediately release what was going on in the investigation. Of course, seeing those $ signs, they released them anyway. It would be great if the Military weren't so afraid of public opinion. Those photos that NBC released were Classified material. That's a crime, media or not.

I think this is one of those things that didn't need to get leaked by the press. It was a few bad people who were caught right away, and the Military had been secretly handling it for five months. There are some things people just don't deserve to know; this was one of them. Especially half a year after it was said and done. All letting the general public know about it now does is create a headache and an uproar over something that was in control and already done and gone.

I mean, it's one thing if the press had gotten ahold of the photographs and found nothing was being done about it. But when they got the photographs they started contacting people in the Department of Defense and found that the soldiers were already about to be courtmartialed and had been removed from their duty in Iraq immediately after it was discovered: five months ago.

And the funny thing is, this story broke about three or four months ago and nobody cared. They just didn't have the pictures to go with it.

Just seemed like something you'd expect more from, oooh, the pre-war Republican Guard than the US army. Aside from that fair 'nuff. Though I do prefer the media pulling stuff like this, it's pretty much what a media is for.

Something like that though, you need the pictures for it to really click at all. Without the pictures, as Maradon would put it, it's just "liberal spin doctoring".

However, I will say that I wasn't against the Iraqi war in all. I disagree with a bit of public policy behind it, but what we have accomplished thus far seems to be a positive change for Iraq.

I will also say that I am completely inept in the art of making and supporting a point, especially in this environment. As such, I will make no further attempts to argue my views in this thread.

I didn't make a judgement call, was just stating what you said.

It is reasonable, considering there has been some evidence that similar photos of British troops abusing Iraqis that showed up in a British tabloid were faked. Something about the military uniforms not even being up to date, among other stuff.

That's not even getting into the fact that the President misled the American public and the UN with known-faulty intelligence, lied about prior planning for the invasion, completely ignored the advisors who gave him war plans that actually had a coherent post-invasion rebuilding strategy, has failed to maintain control of large portions of the country so miserably that troops stationed in Iraq are being forced to have their tours of duty extended beyond a year, and has made such a mess that nobody has any expectation of a calm Iraq in the forseeable future.

Only half of this stuff is Rumsfeld's fault.

If we hadn't heard about it through the mass media, it would have eventually got around, one way or another. While things like this MAY have happened in the past...news about them would have been at least somewhat wide spread. Soldiers would tell stories, something. people WOULD hear about it. Of course, mass media really started to get big in, if I remember right, the late 1800s, around 1880. I don't have my notes from my class with an exact date for you, but this was around the time when newspapers started to get big. I'm sure that if this was widespread in WW1, WW2, Vietnam War, Korean War, or any other small skirmishes, it would have been in newspapers and such.

So, yeah.
