Well, see, I've lost my Black and White CD. Again.

It's someone where int he pit of my room - I'm sure of it, this time. I have thecase, and the CD key, and I DO know where it is... It's in my veyr large CD case. Now.... where my CD case is, only god knows. Probably buried under furnature. This is my second copy of the game, since my sister threw out the frist one.

Would it be wrong for me to download and install a warezed version of B&W, since I own the game, but I just can't find the CD? Similarly, woul dit be wrong to use a warezed version if my CD stopped workign?

Yes, it would be wrong.

They won't keep the warez up if no one downloads them, but as long as there's an interest in stolen software, it will be there.

Well you purchased an EULA not the software itself. So under that point of view it seems alright. Though I'm not a lawyer.

It would be more acceptable if you just downloaded a cd crack to run the game without needing the CD, though. Of course, you have to actually have it installed...

That's the issue...

But ya know, it's wayyyy to annoying to have to play though the tutorial (they made it so you can skip the whole tutorial mess and just jump right into the game, if you can't patch it. Of cours,e you can't patch a warez version. ) It's just... if you OWN it, isn't it ok to have a back up copy?

In terms of what's morally wrong, getting a copy of a game you have doesn't seem too bad, so it's probably okay to follow the law's intent instead of the law's stated meaning occasionally.

No, it's not okay. Not even a little bit.

Why on earth would you imagine it would be okay to do something illegal to counteract pure, unadulterated laziness and inefficiency on your part?

You wouldn't ask, "I can't find my diamond ring, so is it okay if I go steal one instead of searching my house?". . .would you? Same thing.

That brings up an interesting point.

The SAT I just took had the opinions of two musicians on Napster. One displayed typical feelings; downloaders of songs are illegal and should stop.

The other, however, made an argument that most people today sell verbs, not nouns. He went on to say that while stealing nouns directly hurts their sales, stealing verbs can increase their sales. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it did make me think.

A diamond ring is a real thing; you can't exactly compare it to intellectual things. It's theft either way, but the impact and damages caused behave completely different.

People say they are different things for only one purpose: to rationalize their theft. In every important way, they are the same.

What you're saying is that it's essentially okay to steal as long as the victim has a whole collection of diamond necklaces, and won't be deprived of their use.

Sorry, but that doesn't cut the logical mustard.

No, you're misconstrueing (sp) my argument to prove YOUR point.

Listen, I'm stealing and I don't give a fuck. I admit to it. I am stealing music. I am a dirty thief. That is out of the way.

I just hate it when people try to say it's the same thing as fucking breaking down someone's door and stealing their shit. IT IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY SIMILAR IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.

This is also specious, and is one of the rhetorical sleights of hand thieves use to justify themselves.

Think about it--what is the incentive to buy something you can have for free? Anyone who's spent more than a nanosecond in the most basic econ class, or has the faintest appreciation for human nature, knows the answer to that one.

The only "conversion" you can make on it to put it into a real term, though, is to see it as a service performed; it has consumed some fraction of the finite time an artist spends alive.

Without it having base in real terms, it remains imaginary, and thus infinite. If someone has inifinite rings, there are more things to worry about than theft (like, how did they get an infinite amount of matter?).

It makes more sense to say you are stealing the artist's time and work, not their song.

It's exactly the same, sorry.

What--you want credit for neatness, or something?

Taking something that doesn't belong to you, simply so you can enjoy something you otherwise couldn't afford is stealing, and there's no difference whether it's a candy bar, a diamond ring, or music.

As a matter of fact, when one adds up the dollar value of most illegal MP3 collections, it ends up in the diamond ring category pretty quickly.

All you're whining about is that, since you can't point to a particular victim by name, that you're not doing anything too wrong. Or, alternatively, the story goes that, since the allegedly main victim, RIAA, is oh-so-evil, it's okay, too.

That's all bullshit.

And the only thing you've offered in your defense is, "Uh-uh! What I do is qualitatively different, even though it's still stealing!"

That's bullshit, too. Either quit whining and accept the fact, or try to say something more creative than, "Is not! I hate that!"

NOT the same thing. she bought the physical cd, case, booklet, etc, and ALSO bought the right to USE the software. Now note the phrasing. Not the right to use the CD, but the software.

Just like purchasing multiple licenses from microsoft, they don't send you multiple cd's, they sell you the right to use the software for multiple users/machines. She purchased the right to use the software, and thus, were she to download a copy of it from elsewhere, there's no ifference than inserting the copy you recieved at the time.

Like this:
You buy a CD.
You want to listen to it on your PC.
instead of ripping the CD, you download ONLY THOSE SONGS which you've PAID for the right to listen to. The source is irrelevant.

So? A diamond ring is just rocks and dirt. And, despite rumors, there's no shortage of either.

Supply and demand work exactly the same way with time as they do with physical commodities.

Doing something illegal simply because one lacks the elementary self-discipline necessary to keep one's house clean, or to keep track of one's possessions, is ridiculous on the face of it.
