I am trying to design a board with a number of squares in the middle (around 30 to 36), a border around it which can be divided up into 12 strips, and then a perimeter of squares around the outside of that (around 24, but I'm not precious about it). Think of it like a field surrounded by a fence with wasteland outside the fence
I have tried a mix of options, squares align best but look a bit stifled. Hexes look great in the middle as they interlock, but I'm struggling to get the boundary around the outside to look good, and then putting a perimeter of hexes around it looks silly. The spaces around the outside need to line up with the rectangles, so for example (ideally) every rectangle has two perimeter spaces linked to it.
Please help.
