Till the End of BC content and then you deal with the having your Damage output normalize to the content.
Though Ret still seems to face roll out descent DPS, I Pull about 2-2.5k DPS In 5 mans now with out really bothering to gear up, or even pay attention to what I am doing.

It's good, but it's still beta. But beta-type issues aside I'm having loads of fun. I made level 11 and got my first non-starter ship and am enjoying that immensely. Space combat is a blast and away-team missions are fun. There's no death penalty (so far) so even ship vs ship pvp is probably good stuff.
That said there's server issues, disconnects, some graphical bugs and things that don't work. Supposedly Cryptic is dealing with bugs non-stop and if they keep dealing with problems, it should all be good. Like every other MMO that's come down the pike, six months after release will be the make-or-break point for most folks.
Once you get your first non-newbie ship, the game becomes a lot more fun and you get a lot more ability choices with your bridge officers (there's a ton of them).
I didn't appreciate ground combat at all until I made a klingon character where you don't have to wait to join pvp matches. Many people will think it's nothing but mashing buttons, but I can pretty much guarantee that I can get first place every time. Using actual tactics you can easily school someone who tries to be rambo.

You do know that you can right-click one forward and one rear-firing weapon on your ship to autofire, right? No have to mashee the space bar that way.
But yeah, it's all about how you set up your action buttons and getting a good rythym going. My normal sequence is: Attack Pattern Alpha 2, Tachyon Beam, photon, Beam Modulation, phaser. After that, it's basically working the cooldowns on your torps, keeping shields up and maintaining situational awareness until all your targets are gone.

Would certainly make away missions easier.
Actually, it's kind of a nifty design. You make your ships in the game by kitbashing, right?

I mean it makes space nicer to look at, but it's rediculous when every sector is as colourful as a childs painting. It's the one gripe I had about EVE.
They look like transwarp tunnels.. but I thought only the Borg had those.

Also got accused of cheating. GREAT SUCCESS!
But goddamn, would my wife bust my balls for playing a Star Trek game.

You say that like you wouldn't enjoy it.

I played the beta just now for a few hours, enough to get into T2 so I can't give a full review.
But.. eh.. I dunno. I like and I don't like it. It feels very much like a reskinned CoH/CO. The ship battles can be fun and tactical but Bridge Commander did it better. I enjoyed the ground missions, but found that the non-combat ground missions were more enjoyable than the combat ones (which are just go kill x amount of y).

In my limited experience it seemed about a 60:40 ratio between fighting scenarios and adventure/exploration. But I think the tutorial and the first couple of missions are very battle orientated in order to draw in the FPS twitchers and teens.

So, what's the news on ship classes and tiers? How high tier is an Akira class heavy escort, and will it be viable endgame via some sort of upgrades?
See my post above and let someone tell you at what level you reach commander.
I didn't do much PvE, but some of the quests I did involved me going back in time and meeting up with the old Enterprise with Kirk, and another where I killed some doomsday machine that looked like flying poo.
I played the beta as Science and I loved the massive shield tank and ground buffs, but I also love the giant ships the Engineers get.
Engineers are pretty much focused on being a presence and having self survivability, that's about it. Although it is fun to keep on trucking when being focused by an entire enemy team while your teammates pick them off.
All hail me.
