It's good, but it's still beta. But beta-type issues aside I'm having loads of fun. I made level 11 and got my first non-starter ship and am enjoying that immensely. Space combat is a blast and away-team missions are fun. There's no death penalty (so far) so even ship vs ship pvp is probably good stuff.

That said there's server issues, disconnects, some graphical bugs and things that don't work. Supposedly Cryptic is dealing with bugs non-stop and if they keep dealing with problems, it should all be good. Like every other MMO that's come down the pike, six months after release will be the make-or-break point for most folks.

I just dropped 200g for Boots of Avoidance. Tank points of +700 of what I was currently wearing. I checked for boots 15 levels above me and 'x of the bear' was only +240. They're gonna last a loooong time. Pretty good investment.

It's definitely going to be released in a beta state. There are so many things that are unpolished, bugged, and annoying (having to mash spacebar), but I will still play the fuck out of it.

Once you get your first non-newbie ship, the game becomes a lot more fun and you get a lot more ability choices with your bridge officers (there's a ton of them).

I didn't appreciate ground combat at all until I made a klingon character where you don't have to wait to join pvp matches. Many people will think it's nothing but mashing buttons, but I can pretty much guarantee that I can get first place every time. Using actual tactics you can easily school someone who tries to be rambo.

You do know that you can right-click one forward and one rear-firing weapon on your ship to autofire, right? No have to mashee the space bar that way.

Having a third beam weapon means you still have to mash.

Granted you really don't have to mash since there's cooldown timers; having to manage speed/direction/angle/shields/abilities means mash time.

I'm running the basic fore and aft phasers with fore and aft photon torps. So autofire works out well for me.

But yeah, it's all about how you set up your action buttons and getting a good rythym going. My normal sequence is: Attack Pattern Alpha 2, Tachyon Beam, photon, Beam Modulation, phaser. After that, it's basically working the cooldowns on your torps, keeping shields up and maintaining situational awareness until all your targets are gone.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand the server is down for fixin'. Wonder what's getting corrected? It would be nice if they fixed the tribble graphical glitch and beaming down as your ship/into space as your toon. Time will tell, I guess.

I wonder why they went with the "everywhere in space there's a giant nebula" thing.

I mean it makes space nicer to look at, but it's rediculous when every sector is as colourful as a childs painting. It's the one gripe I had about EVE.

Those are warp gates, but they are there just for show in that pvp map. Romulans use them in one of the missions.
There's three types of ships in every tier that you can mix and match parts from.

Also got accused of cheating. GREAT SUCCESS!

I played the beta just now for a few hours, enough to get into T2 so I can't give a full review.

But.. eh.. I dunno. I like and I don't like it. It feels very much like a reskinned CoH/CO. The ship battles can be fun and tactical but Bridge Commander did it better. I enjoyed the ground missions, but found that the non-combat ground missions were more enjoyable than the combat ones (which are just go kill x amount of y).

Are there actual adventures or does the game 100% revolve around shooting klingons and murlocs?

Someone who got to a higher tier would be best to answer that. I don't want to play anymore until release since all beta chars will get wiped and it'd pretty much be a waste of my time.

In my limited experience it seemed about a 60:40 ratio between fighting scenarios and adventure/exploration. But I think the tutorial and the first couple of missions are very battle orientated in order to draw in the FPS twitchers and teens.

So, what's the news on ship classes and tiers? How high tier is an Akira class heavy escort, and will it be viable endgame via some sort of upgrades?

Level 21 gets you commander; and lower tier ships will never be as good as higher tier ones.

I didn't do much PvE, but some of the quests I did involved me going back in time and meeting up with the old Enterprise with Kirk, and another where I killed some doomsday machine that looked like flying poo.

What's the best class to play out of Engineering and Science, in your opinion?

I played the beta as Science and I loved the massive shield tank and ground buffs, but I also love the giant ships the Engineers get.

nem-x
posted 01-24-2010 08:46:28 AM
Science is probably more fun to play because they get a lot of abilities that can really fuck with enemies. You can run full power on offense and make enemies unable to target you or make shoot at each other instead. A lot of science vessels top damage charts easily. You probably have to think more playing as a science.

Engineers are pretty much focused on being a presence and having self survivability, that's about it. Although it is fun to keep on trucking when being focused by an entire enemy team while your teammates pick them off.
