It's funny how Kirane still can't understand the problem with his numberplate.

It's phonetically impossibly to get an 'a' sound in there. Unless you have an oddly lilting accent. I should be correctly pronounced as a 'door' sound. So every single person who drives behind him will speak it out loud as dorkness and he still doesn't realise it.

My numberplate has 'AGE' at the end. I really am an old fogey.

Exactly. If he had actually wanted it to be read as Darkness, it should've been Darknss. Much easier to append an e sound than an a.

We rented a Focus once for a one-day gig. It was okay. Didn't rock my world or anything. Gas mileage wasn't anything to write home about, and I gather that depending on model (hatch back or sedan) you either suffer for lack of passenger space or you can carry the passengers but not their stuff. We used the Focus to go up and collect Lyinar's son for the summer, and had pretty decently loaded the cargo space with just his odds and ends.

The weird thing I noticed was that the chairs were set down on the floor as opposed to being up an inch or two...but then the sedan model has that "I like big butts" rear profile. I was fine driving, but I imagine for someone smaller like Lyinar or her Mom, it would seriously cut down on rear visibility.

It wasn't as bad as some cars I've driven, mind you. I could name a few that come to mind that I wouldn't ever drive again for one reason or another, or just plain don't care for. But yeah...the Focus was sort of a middle-ground "Meh" car.

I imagine that Aury does a decent amount of in-town tooling around, which is what I gather the Focus was made for (as opposed to long distance highway driving, which is what we rented ours for) so it could work out. Plus even if it's just new to Aury, chances are it's a step up from whatever he was driving, which if you're looking for a budget solution isn't a bad situation.

Say "rk"

What does it sound like? Probably "ark", since r sounds like "ar".

Ok now say "ss"

What does it sound like? Probably "ess", since s sounds like "es".

Ok now say "Drk". Just read the letters out loud.

Did you say "dork"?

Since when does any word or syllable that has the letter "R" in it, or at the beginning of it, actually sound like the letter itself is pronounced?

oh god this topic has gotten stupid but i'm adding to it anyway

Wouldn't "rk" be pronounced "ruk" or "rek"?

I can't think of any words that begin with the letter R that have a strong R sound. To get the "er" or "ar" sounds, you generally have to have to E or A in front of the R, but in this case there is none.

I agree that Drk would be pronounced "durk" or "derk" though.

YOU ARE ARRRRTARDED.

Seriously now. Is there ANY word in the english language where the letter R in a word makes the "AR" sound without having an A in front of it?

Except you didn't ask for "r." You asked for "rk." That's not a letter. When I sound it out as if it were a word I don't say "ark." If I were to do that, it would be because I'm simply naming the letters. "Ar-kay." We're talking about leaving vowels out while still trying to make words. R is pronounced "ar" when naming the letter, but the sound that it makes as a letter is an "er" sound. Go back to school.

I'll ask you the same question as Blindy. Is there a word in the English language that makes the "er" sound with the R being at the front of the word?

...then again, I can't think of any words that don't have a vowel either before or after the R, which I guess would make "erk" be the proper pronunciation.

Hmm.
