If we're not there yet, we're close.

One thing I thought was most interesting is that the last new class of antibiotic was discovered 27 years ago. It's no wonder we're running out of drugs to use.

It's worth noting that antibiotic resistance is not a new adaptation, but a naturally occurring trait generally found in soil bacteria like anthrax. It's energy intensive and in a normal environment it is not a survival trait.

With the FDA banning many antibiotics for livestock, one of the primary drivers of antibiotic resistance will be tapering off, and it's entirely possible that we'll avoid a post-antibiotic world.
