Supported by microtransactions or did you actually mean to type "Free to Play"?

Supported by microtransactions yes, but they're entirely 100% optional and only there if you don't want to wait to randomly/complete cheeves to get a side grade/worse weapon than the defaults.

Or just ask friends for spare weapons.

Oh geez, I just noticed the typo. But yeah, it's free. And there are micros. But what I said still stands. The only advantage they offer is for the BUT I WANT IT NOOOOOOOOOOW crowd.

Here's the full breakdown on the differences. http://tf2.com/freetoplay/faq.php

Haven't played TF2 since two weeks after the orange box has been released. What would I want to buy in that game? Hats, huh, what?

They have 3 or 4 different weapon options for each class and weapon slot.

Some of them significantly change the class. For example, the demo-man can get a shield instead of a sticky bomb launcher, and one of many bladed melee weapons (axe, katana, scotish claymore), and becomes a brawler that takes very little explosive or fire damage and kills people in one or two melee hits, as well as can charge at 300% speed for a few seconds.

Some items provide bonuses when you wear the whole set.

Medic has one where you regain +1 health per second.
Sniper has one where headshots will only bring you down to 1 life, but not kill you.

Little things that can change playstyle without severely unbalancing the game.

As for me, I'm looking forward to playing again since I lost interest a few weeks ago.

This ofcourse is about the only drastic difference weapon options make. Every other class gets items that operate either the same way but alter things a bit(more damage, but less total health or ammo,) or replace something to improve on something else - Soldier getting boots that replace his shotgun, but in exchange takes less self-damage on rocket jumps or grant the ability to goomba stomp his foes.

The feign death watch and disguise on backstab knife change the spy up a bit.

The mini turret and remote control make a big difference for the engineer- they can become pretty strong at offence when played right.

The tommy gun and run-fast gloves for the heavy make him much more maneuverable.

The bow for the sniper means he can get much closer. I've had success flag running with him, if you've got the twitch for it it's almost like the insta-death railgun mods in quake3.

But the demo-man probably is the most drastic.

Yeah, I meant playstyle-wise. Sniper still gets his headshot mechanic, Engineer still builds things, Spy still sneaks, Heavy is still TF2 Training Wheels. Those weapons just allow these guys to do things in different ways, as you've mentioned.

Demoknights made Demoman two different classes. Not that theres anything wrong with that and it's really the only way Valve can really add to Demoman without tipping the scales and making him stronger than he is(which is really, really strong in good hands) or making him weaker which in turn will make players ignore those weapons.

Not really. ET is a game centered around Classes peforming specific tasks to help the team to victory. TF2 is just standing around a bomb on a mine cart or on a position in the map or getting to a briefcase and bringing back and the moving from point a to point b and killing guys in between to do so. There is no ramp building or blowing up, no tanks to drive or repair, no walls to demolish, nobody to revive, no land mines to plant or detect.

Brink is ET. TF2 is CTF, Capture and Defend, Push Maps, or "VIP" Escorting with classes that do things differently from eachother but can still do everything objective-wise. A team of all Soldiers can win a game just as well as a team of all classes without having to change class at any point in the game.

My point was that it isn't a squad shooter.

There's not really any tactics involved minus "kill the dudes on the other team".
