Alright, so as of the end of August I will be moving to Fairfax, Virginia, right outside of Washington DC, called by Graduate School. I have lived all of my life in the Northwestern three of the lower 48, so I don't know what to expect.

What awaits me there? Are there any good microbreweries on the East Coast? Will everyone speak twice as fast as me and my podunk Western ass? I need comparisons, tips, anything you have!

Actually they talk pretty much the same as in Houston where I am from. Just be prepared for an ASSLOAD of traffic when you are trying to get anywhere. Oh and learn the backroads!

Beware liberals and traffic. The Beltway is insane about 20 hours a day. There are plenty of good microbrews out here--you'll probably have Yuengling for the first time.

But Fairfax edging towards the South, and rural bliss isn't too far away so you won't find it as unappealing as, say, the Strong Island or other parts of the Godless Northeast.

Be careful on the roads, as VA drivers are especially bad. VA roads aren't too great, either.

Also, there's this weird, socialist contrivance in the cities known as "mass transit." It may seem archaic, but it's just one of those weird things we do out east.

Glad to hear there are plenty of microbrews. I was worried I would have to just drink Sam Adams all the time.

I will not be worried too much about traffic, since I won't have a car. Fairfax seems to have a decent bus system, and I can use the metro to get out to George Mason's satellite campuses.

I should also be isolated enough from the evil liberals by my location in the George Mason economics program, which seems flush with libertarians. In fact, Walter E Williams is my first semester Micro teacher.

Depending on your area, it would not be out of the question to find a local bar that does casks and stuff like that.

Virginia isn't East Coast. Virginia is Down South. At least to this Yankee.

I tend to think of Virginia as "that hellish non-state commonwealth cesspit that ate four years of my life."

Virginia is nice. My sister lived there for awhile and turned out mostly okay.

Charlottesville is kind of a ghetto, though. I'd advise taking self-defense classes (though, this is really just good advice for living on your own anywhere).

Expect on the upside:
-More outgoing people
-Lots of outdoor stuff to do
-Good steak

On the downside:
-People mispronouncing "Rio" and "Verde"
-No good Mexican
-Rape

The Virginia/DC area is a nice place for recent college grads. Most people who I know in the area thoroughly enjoy it.

Classic buildings, a good transportation system, and plenty to do. Just use common sense and stay away from the very bad areas.

edit: Staying away from places that will get you mugged/shot is a much wiser idea than relying on self defense classes, even if you are UFC level.

Speaking as someone who lived in New England for almost all of his life and flies to Virginia a couple times a year, I can say the attitudes of people from New England and DC/Virginia are rather similar.

Don't expect southern hospitality, but don't expect southern slowness either.

Worrying that there won't be any microbreweries in one of the original 13 colonies is a little like worrying that you might not find any poverty in Africa.

To be fair, Colorado and Montana lead the nation in microbrews per capita.

Karnaj lives on the East Coast.

He always gets really upset when I say "Joisey" or "New Yawk."

This is offensive to him.

Calling it "Jew York" is not, apparently.

Indeed. It is pretty awesome that when I am in the grocery store not only do I Find A full isle(Left and Right) of beer, almost everything stocked are the local microbrews. Bayern's ragon Breath Dark Heff Is a local favorite of mine, and BigSky's Moose Drool is pretty good to.
