These two people defined the American political left as it exists today.

This man defined the American political right as it exists today, with an assist from this man.

Learn about these people and you will understand the baseline political beliefs of each party. It is very rare for conservatives to find anything that they disagree with in Reagan, just as it's very rare for Liberals to find anything that they disagree with in FDR. Neither set of beliefs was created by either set of people, they just fit the template better than any recent example.

Basically, the left wants limited economic freedoms; the right want less restrictions on the free markets.

See the Political Compass for a more extensive analysis.

There is also the hidden aspect of who decides what the values and goals should be for an individual. Liberals (in the US) want to decide and impose their own values and goals on individuals with greater control over the economic markets. Conservatives also want to decide and impose a different set of values and goals on individuals with fewer controls (or regulations) on the economic markets. Libertarians want to leave the decision of values and goals with the individual with an even greater laissez-faire approach to the economic market.

The differences in who decides those values and goals is better explained in a symposium between B. F. Skinner and Carl Rogers (“Some Issues Concerning the Control of Human Behavior: A Symposium.” Science 124, no. 3231 (1956):
1057–66. Also published in L. Gorlow and W. Katkovsky, eds., Readings in the Psychology of Adjustment. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1959; and in R. I. Evans, Carl Rogers—the Man and His Ideas. New York: Dutton, 1975.)

So, do you want to preserve free will and personal freedom, or do you want to exert control in the form of values and goals over other's behaviors (i.e., criminal, economic, educational, religious-based) under the auspices of the government? Or is it possible to reach a universally acceptable balance between the two?

I think what you're seeing here is that it's a little more complicated than two uniform parties.

In my mind, there are really four different groups.
1- Southern/Evangelical Conservatives (ex: George W. Bush)

  • Think the purpose of government is to act to preserve morality and (their) social norms.
  • Don't want evolution taught in schools.
  • Think that gays should be outlawed.
  • Think that abortion should be outlawed.
  • Think that prayer should be put in schools, government, and court-houses.
  • Think that America is exceptional and has a special role in this world that should be pushed as often as needed to make the world a better place.
  • Have no idea how to balance a budget, lowers taxes on rich people and raises spending.
  • Are fucking terrified of Islamic people.
  • Push for "Sin" taxes on Cigerettes, booze, porn, ecetera to push people towards "moral" lifestyles.

2- Libertarians/Fiscal Conservatives (ex: Ron Paul, Maradon)

  • Think that the purpose of government is to run the military and have relations with other countries for the purposes of trade agreements, and no more.
  • Want no entanglement with foreign governments (fucking hate the U.N.)
  • Think that the free market is the ultimate safe wealth builder and any regulations of the market or business only serve to cause problems and hamper growth and cause recessions.
  • Think that the government should stay out of people's damn lives. Gays are OK. Guns are OK. Pot is (sometimes) OK.
  • Think that we need a balanced budget, want to lower taxes on rich people and cut spending to do so.

3- Social Progressives (Ex: Barrack Obama)

  • Think that the government should keep people from hurting other people.
  • Think that the government should keep businesses from hurting people.
  • Think that we need a balanced budget, want to raise taxes on rich people and cut spending to do so.
  • Prefers democracy to military persuasion, not above using military where needed.
  • Are generally OK with other states who say they want to blow us up.
  • Want the government to push the free market towards some things, such as alternative energy.

4- Liberals (Ex: Nancy Pelosi)

  • Think that the government's role is to provide for people- Welfare, Socialized, government ran health care, retirement.
  • Push for "Sin" taxes on Cigerettes, booze, porn, ecetera to push people towards "healthy" lifestyles.
  • Think that the free market should be heavily regulated to prevent any recessions.
  • Think businesses exploit workers- push for unions.
  • Think people are mean to minorities- push for Affirmative Action.
  • Want guns outlawed.
  • Support abortion rights.
  • Want a much smaller military, used only as an absolute last resort and defense.

All political ideologies and movements are dynamic deceits: They are all 100% Hi-grade Bullshit. However, they can all impact on your life, your community, your country in very real ways--both positively and negatively.

For that reason, it's important to engage with them anyway. They aren't harmless.

The "religious right" isn't an endemic part of the political right. They're a special interest group, like environmentalists or union labor are to the left. They gravitate toward one party or another in order to gain political influence, but their concerns aren't necessarily tied directly to the party platform, although people on both sides try to portray it that way.

The difference between interest groups and the party proper is that interest groups are mostly modular; their primary concerns could easily be championed by any part of the political spectrum.

For example, I've always suggested that environmentalists and the religious really ought to swap parties. Religion is inherently authoritarian, and would provide the left with unquestionable, politically radioactive reasons for social handout programs, sin taxes, and other things that they like a lot. On the other hand, environmentalism is inherently concerned with the preservation of wealth in the form of the natural world, something that would have a bit more synergy with the right.

Oh yes let's all draw an equivalence between urging action on the bailout and signing away constitutional rights with the Patriot act.

I'm not 100% in support of Obama. I was very disappointed with his actions on the stimulus bill. However, I still think that tax cuts for the middle class are needed to get out of this recession and that's what a large part of the Stimulus bill is.

And I've said a number of times that I supported McCain in the 2000 elections, and in the 1990s I was pretty much a Republican. Now I'll support any Republican who wants to debate issues on logic instead of emotional appeal and fear mongering, and who will try to win elections on economics instead of gay bashing, xenophobia and pro-life appeals. I was very impressed with some quotes I heard from Mitt Romney at the CPAC conference. I like the Govenator. Ron Paul's good, but a little too ideological to run the country. Rudy Giuliani has his moments. And Mike Huckabee seems like a pretty good guy.
