Final Fantasy Versus XIII

I'm waiting to see how the game actually plays before making a judgement, but I don't have high expectations after seeing all the funky yellow stormtroopers.

I agree that 10 was good, 10-2 wasn't though. Still, I saw the previews for 10 and felt it would be 'meh' and I was wrong, so maybe 13 will end up good.

I still wish they'd release gameplay from vs 13. It sounds intriguing, KH-ish but not as light hearted, but the feeling I get from the trailers is that it'll degenerate into yet another Squall emofest 10 minutes in.

10-2 was amazing gameplay. A shame it drove so many people away with the story.

I still loved it though.

I liked FF9 because of the tedious AP system.

More of the same with a slightly different story.

13 is supposed to be turn-based RPG.

Vs 13 is supposed to be action-RPG-ish thing similar to Kingdom Hearts.

At first I thought "oh fucking great another hyper-femme main character" then I realized this one is actually female, haha. It's so hard to tell with Square these days!

So have they decided if this is coming out on the 360 or should I continue not caring about it?

Are you serious? It'll probably be like this: turn-based, menu-driven combat with personal RPG statistics for each member of a 3-5 person team in a storyline involving saving the world from a transsexual angel mutant.

I thoroughly enjoyed XII. I found the License board to be intuitive enough, and I liked the gambit systems if/then approach. Regular battles felt no less engaging than standard Final Fantasies, while boss battles were often challenging. (At least, prior to receiving Elemental Weakness gambits.) What I enjoyed most was being able to have a choice of weapons for the characters. I don't like the one-weapon per character deal of 7-10.

I'm revisiting X this holiday season. Dodging lightning is the dumbest gimmick ever.
I do like X's combat system though- it's fast paced for a turn-based system, while including an element of strategy (however minimal) due to the turn list and delay effects. Characters and enemies attacking while another is returning to their position has quite an effect on combat speed. I do wish things like Bombs growing didn't stop all other movement, though.
Not a huge fan of the sphere grid. It feels like pseudo freedom and a failed attempt at rethinking standard leveling. I'm still getting experience, however I'm gaining "s. Levels" now!

I plan on picking up X-2 at some point in time, primarily because I've heard great things about the battle system. And I think my sister would like it.

X-2 sadly doesn't make a whole lot of sense storywise without the hours of X behind it, though it tries hard.

And I felt there were more unlockables/sidequests in X-2 than X. Maybe that's just me.

X-2 was what final fantasy players have ALWAYS wanted - an extremely thorough epilogue that ties up all the loose ends.

It just happened to be packaged strangely.

I didn't give X-2 much of a chance -- after the somewhat bleak and serious tone of X, X-2's ditzy pop and mini-game bias discouraged me from expecting any worthwhile character development. Are you saying it's actually worth playing through the monkey match-making bullshite to see what happens to Yuna?

I don't see why.

I loathe mini-games. I consider them the worst form of cop-out to fill in gameplay time without having to actually include storyline time.

Minigames in XII were nigh inexistant, and mostly optional in X (Blitzball was pretty fun on its own actually.) What I've seen of X-2 is like 25% minigames, so I'm unimpressed.

If X left you hard up for storyline loose-end tying, then X-2 is good. Your best bet to get through the "monkey match-making bullshit" is to MST3K the whole experience.

It's been a while since I've played it, but the system even allows you to get ridiculously powerful as soon as you get alchemist/dark knight. And there are a lot (A LOT) of sidequests and even a faction decision halfway through.

There hasn't been a good Final Fantasy since 7.

Yeah, I said it.

FF8: Underwhelming, did not play. FF9: Unapologetically sissy. FF10: Stupid plot, dumb characters. FF10-2: Hahahahaha. FF11: MMOG. FF12: All the repetitive, tedious grinding of an MMOG with none of the men posing as girls to cyber.

FF13? Well, the only people excited about it are Gainsborough, Tier and probably Azmyth and Archangel.

The people rest.
