Okay, so the internet has been excruciatingly slow on my system for the past couple of weeks, and I chalked it up to the local phone company. . .until yesterday when I noticed Vernal's system is still pretty much connecting at normal speeds.

Did the easy troubleshooting already: exited virus program (Kaspersky), exited sidebar, exited everything I could find running in the background.

But the suckage persists. The Google homepage takes 2-5 seconds to load, fercryinoutloud! Forget anything with actual content; half the time pages time out and I have to reload and hope for the best.

So what could be causing this mysterious internet stoppage, and how do I fix it? I plan to update the driver for my wireless NIC tomorrow. . .and I really don't want to re-install Vista.

And if I do finally punt and re-install Vista, I'd have to go with a clean install to move up to the 64-bit version, wouldn't I?

Haelp?

Is the speed equally slow on IE and Firefox?

Likely a faulty NIC.

Is it equally slow using the domain name vs the raw IP (f.e. google.com vs. http://64.233.187.99/ )?

Any major packetloss to your router? To google?

This exact same thing happened to me recently. Very bad ping, files downloaded at 10kbps max. It was like being on dialup.

I got pissed at it. all I did was ipconfig /flushdns, reset my router and dsl modem, and turned my computer off for eight hours.

Turned out to be the NIC. I thought I'd double-check for newer drivers. . .and found that it wasn't Vista compatible and the company had no plans to make it so. A quick trip to the BX and $79 later I've got a new wireless NIC and the intarweb loves me again, albeit at the still-slow pace of rural DSL.

Rural DSL? What is this witchery?

There are about 1500 people living in our town. The nearest town is a 7 minute drive. The nearest grocery store is a 15 minute drive. The drive to work is 30-40 minutes (depending on if we get stuck driving behind a tractor or a semi). The nearest "mall" is an outlet mall about 20 minute drive from our house.

We're in a pretty rural area.

Holy shitballs, $79 for a NIC? Guess you pay for the convenience in a big way.

Okay, here's another, dumber, question: at what point, if at all, will signal strength affect connection speed?

Due to the age and layout of the house--Germans seem to think you only need two telephone outlets in a 3-storey house. So we've got one downstairs outside the dining room, and one in the master bedroom. . .but my office is on the third floor on the opposite side of the house and I only get about 24% signal strength.

I'm thinking of disabling the wireless on the current router and using it to drive a 802.11N wireless router. . .theoretically boosting signal strength some.

Is it worth the price of the expensive new router? Will a boosted signal strength have any advantage at all?
