Topic: Buying a new computer (don't need specs, just a company)

Okay

I bought a new computer from IBuyPower, and basicly, they sent me a broken motherboard in my new computer, replaced by sending me a new motherboard that had no manual and the model number was covered by a sticker, etc...

In short it was a huge hassle, and eventually I finally gave up and sent it back to them.

After the way their Customer Support yanked me around, I'm hesitant to try again with them, but I really liked the computer I got, and I'm willing to believe it was just a bad situation...

So I'm looking at a new computer... I'm hesitant about a Dell or a Gateway, I've heard they can be a bit overpriced... I'm looking for a good computer for about $1200. I'm willing to try IBuyPower if I get enough people in favor of it (People still tell me to try them -_-)

I really don't want to build my own. Just don't want the hassle and the worry, and I like the warranty, etc.
I like how customizable IBuyPower is, and I like that it's a fairly reputable company. I don't want to buy from Bob's Discount Computer Super Warehouse or anything...

I can build one for you and then just ship it to you. I've built quite a few now for various customers, and since you are worried about warranties, I'll mention that on several items of importance, like the processor, I always get the retail version that includes the 3 year manufacturer's warranty. The rest is covered well by Newegg, as many of the folks on here can attest to, myself included.

Compaq is a legitimate choice if you want to avoid Dell and Gateway. I don't have any testimonials from people as to their quality, but a computer is a computer, you are mostly looking for the name and service that comes with that name.

Dell > Compaq as far as I'm concerned :/

She's looking for a gaming machine in that price range I believe, and I wouldn't look at Compaq for that

I like my Alienware.

I would recommend them.

*waits for the smart remarks of how they are overpriced etc etc*

And.. maybe right.. but, I'm very happy, and recommend them fully.

Actully, you got dell kinda reversed. They are very cheap if you follow fatwallet for good deals. The problem is their tech support is rather sub par. In fact, if you have any problems with a dell machine, chances are you'll be petitioning congress to wage war on India and China just to get revenge on their horrendous support. The only thing dell really has going for it is their prices if they accidently overlap deals.

I have never dealt with compaq, but they have a reputation for being the Kia of the computer industry, so i'd avoid them too.

Everyone I know who bought an Alienware machine has nothing but good things to say about them, and i hear their prices went down a bit, but last i checked they were still a little overpriced.

I'd also be wary about e-bay and homebuilt machines, becuase they tend to break down more than store brands.

So what's good? I have no idea. But just be sure to do a little research before you buy one. I'd say india's pretty much slaughtering the quality of the market. We are getting more power for a cheaper price, but there are a lot of sacrifices that come with that.

Well the main problem with Dell is that they use shitty components. Or so I've heard.

I got a computer from them as well, and the little interior neonish light set on fire inside the monitor on like the third or fourth day. There was a bit of a hassle to get my money back, but I eventually got it back. I'd reccomend going a different route this time.

I wouldn't say they're shitty, but you get what you pay for. I've had the Dell I use for maybe 3 years now and I haven't had any problems with any of the components.

Dell is a good, inexpensive choice if you don't mind buying a video card seperately since their options are very limited and usually overpriced.

Monarch Computer has a pretty good reputation. I've never dealt with any of their boxes first hand, but they're basically homebrew boxes they put together and sell for small overhead and a warranty.

I bought the parts to mine and put it togather myself. Wasn't all that hard, kinda like dropping all the stuff in the case and giving it a shake. More so I got the brnds/part I wanted, nothing cheaped out. The only problem I have had is with my CD-RW drive crapping out, but I blame Sony for that.

If it is like a replacement of the old one, I Imagine there are parts you can pull out from the old to use in the new if thats the case.

I've put together my own before.

I know how to do it.

I listed a number of reasons why I don't want to.

Another reason I like IBuyPower is the absence of software it comes with.

I hate all the junk that HP puts on their stuff, and things like that.

You can try XiComputer if you want, though I can't say yet how good they'll be. It's where I'm getting mine from and it won't be here till this coming Friday, however they offer an onsite warranty, and the "Choose your computer parts" thing was very good. When I called to talk to them about my computer I've gotten someone to talk to within 30 seconds of being transfered. Course, that's just sales, haven't done tech yet. But when the sales guy looked over my computer he knew his stuff and told me I needed to change my Ram type and motherboard to fit the processor I wanted. So, at this point I'm happy with them. Not sure how much they are though. I'm getting a high end system, minus a graphics card, for 3.3k But the base package before I changed it was 1300.

edit: made a sentence easier to understand
